Ducks would do well to avoid this particular Lake on defense By Kevin Allen Emerald Sports Reporter When Oregon took on UCLA at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena last season, Bruin Carnell Lake had one of his biggest defen sive games of the year and UCLA responded with a 41-10 blowout of the Ducks. Lake's inspired game includ ed six tackles, three quarter back sacks and a fumble recov ery. This year, with UCLA bring ing its national-championship caliber team to Autzen Stadium on Saturday, Lake will enter as a top candidate for the Butkus award. The 6-foot-1, 204-pound out side linebacker has earned his way into the eyes of opposing offenses, making his job twice as hard as opponents avoid Lake with keenness. But Lake uses the added pressure as an opportunity to display his ability and the Bru in team to tho world. ‘‘This year is different,” Lake said. "With me being known, 1 think teams are doing things of fensively to prevent me from rushing (the quarterback) as much and other things, which affects my play, obviously. I’m sure Oregon is going to do it this year. They don't want to get another slap in the face, which is understandable." Lake finished last season leading the Pacific-10 Confer ence in quarterback sacks with 1.1. and was tied for the leauue lead with 19 tackles for losses. Although the added publicity has hurt this year’s statistics, his numbers are still nothing to laugh at. In eight games this season, Lake has 55 tackles. 35 of which are unassisted, 10 tack les for losses, including four sacks; he has also recovered a fumble and broken up one pass. UCLA coach Terry Dona hue calls Lake ‘‘the best line backer I’ve ever coached." Although the Oregon-UCLA game has lost some of its ap peal, with Oregon’s 21-20 heartbreaking loss to Arizona State last weekend and the Bru ins’ 34-30 loss at home to Washington State, Lake still figures a good game is in store for the fans. “Its really going to be a good game ... because we’re going to be bouncing back from the loss and we're going to have some kept-up emotions that we will probably want to release on Saturday.” Extra emotion from the UCLA defense is probably not good news to the Ducks, who with Musgrave out for the sea son with a broken collarbone may struggle to put points on the board. If UCLA needs any extra in centive, it can be found in two words: Rose Bowl. Yes, despite the loss, the Bruins will play Jan. 2 at home if they win the rest of their games including USC, and, of course, Oregon.
