Continued from Page 4 cheerleader.” Other characteristics Brooks and Maulding look for when choosing the 10-woman, five man crew are dance experience and gymnastic skills for the women, and physical strength for the men. Appearance and personality are key attributes as well. The dancing is what attracted Brust to being a cheerleader. "Before I became a cheer leader 1 knew they had an ex cellent reputation, but I've al ways danced and 1 could con tinue that as a cheerleader. It’s a really fun activity.” While the cheerleaders do get to travel somewhat, they don’t go everywhere the teams go be cause of a limited budget. “We don’t really have a set figure to work with,” Maulding said. "It varies all of the time.” “Most of the money is gener ated through the different Ore gon Clubs and donations peo ple check on their season tick ets.” Brooks said. “We mostly go places that we can drive to such as Corval lis, Seattle, and Pullman this year. We will go to a football bowl game though because the team, cheerleaders, and march ing band are usually a pack aged deal.'’ The cheerleaders did follow the Duck basketball team to New Mexico last year for the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The women cheerleaders will get added exposure in January when they represent the west ern part of the country in the Japan Bowl all-star football game in Tokyo along with USC. Women cheerleading squads from Michigan and Syr acuse will represent the east. "We've been in the running the past two years for the game, but this is the first year our women were selected.” Brooks said. “It’s a chance for some national exposure, as the game will be televised by ESPN.” Despite the work, most cheerleaders feel that the ad vantages outweigh the disad vantages. “I wouldn't trade it for any thing,” second-year cheerlead er Robyn Forstrom said. “It's good exercise and it’s fun to travel and see lots of different campuses. We also get lots of exposure representing the school." Brust, who hopes to get into business after graduation, sees her time as dance captain very valuable. “The leadership skills I’ve learned will really help in busi ness,” she said. "The PR work has helped develop my com munication skills and these things will help supplement my resume.” With eight out of 10 women and three out of five men re turning from last year, this year has been particularly enjoyable for Brooks, daughter of head football coach Rich Brooks. “It’s nice to have that kind of experience back," she said. “With that many people return ing, it really makes for a good year.” YOGURT MILL THE ULTIMATE FROZEN YOGURT I I * , .-S'' i FOOTBALL FANS i i I Bring in game stub and receive... | ONE FREE TOPPING i For every game stub honored, Yogurt Hill * will donate 25 C to \ the Fighting Ducks! — COUPON—— GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK!
