Oregon vs Washington. Brag ging rights to the entire north west at stake. Respect for Ore gon football waiting in the wings. The game is the biggest event of the year. Face it. it's the big _Commentary gest game of every year, at least in the valley. The Oregon Washington rivalry has been fairly heated for many years, but that friction is amplified whenever the Ducks beat the Huskies. It’s amplified this year. Three-hundred students (with 30,000 fee cards) lined up for tickets on Monday, long be fore the office opened. Every one hoping for a victory. But if Washington wins, it’ll be back to the same old scene. Washington saves face, tradi tion restored for another year. Oregon wishing the loss was in Washington, because whatever the rivalry is down here, it isn’t the same up north. The Huskies don't respect Oregon at all. Chris Chandler, Washington quarterback last season, said the Ducks' 29-22 victory was an embarrassing loss. Cary Conklin, quarterback this season, told reporters Sat urday that. “We owe them one.” The Ducks have been of fering similar quotes about the game also. Washington's schedule is al ways choked full of interesting games with big name schools like Ohio State, Texas A&M, Brigham Young, and so on. But they don’t call those "pay day" games. Sure they make money, but mainly they expect to win, win, win. Losing is a disgrace, especially to Oregon, a team they're supposed to own — have in their hip pocket. After all, Washington has been to a bowl game the last nine years in a row compared with Oregon's 24 years in a row missing post season. The Huskies play to huge sellouts in Seattle, which has Hoeing, the Space Needle, the Seahnwks, and more than a million people. The Ducks play in Eugene, hippy town; two hours away from Portland. The Ducks got that sucker punch in last year, and the swelling just won't go away. Not without a Washington victory. Even the Seattle writers lend a hand in condemning Oregon. John Owen, a sports columnist for the Seattle Post-Intelligenc er. reviewed the Pac-10 for an Athlon Publications magazine before the season began, and where do you think he put the Ducks? Dead last, behind Ore gon State and Washington Stat e. Those teams get lucky once in a while too. Hut then the Huskies get mad and clean up the next year, keeping Seattle Turn to Rivalry, Page 10 I 870 Pearl 686-2873 LOUNGE SPECIALS Steamer Clam bucket... $260 Oyster Shooters just 30$ each!
