Hairstyle trends buck conformity predictability

New techniques in styling,
coloring, and perming have
made almost anything possi
ble in hair fashion. Current
style has also made almost
anything possible acceptable.
"Anything Is in again, from
very short to long. Hair is
longer, softer, wilder and
more outrageous than last
year," Elaine Kershaw, Presi
dent of the local Hairdressers
Association said.
She added that women's
hair is less traditional, with
more vibrant color and spiral
permanents. More and more
people are coloring their hair
whether it be blond or red or
something in between.
Weaves can also be used to
make hair more than one col
or. Brown hair can look bright
er by weaving four or five
shades of brown Into it. Sever
al salons said that coloring is
about the most popular trend
in current hair fashion.
Another technique that is
being introduced to the Eu
gene area is hair extensions.
It is now possible to make
even the shortest hair instant
ly long. Real or synthetic hair
may be braided in, added un
derneath hair or permanently
glued into hair. Kershaw said
that glue gun techniques are
new to Oregon this fall and
currently costs $250 to $450
in Portland, but will become
less expensive as the demand
increases.
In general women are wear
ing their hair in more soft,
feminine styles. The spiky,
harsh cuts are now a thing of
the past, along with brash, flo
rescent colors.
Longer hair is still in style
for men who just grew It out
when the trend for long hair
began last year. Others, how
ever, are opting for shorter
hair, although not as short as
in the past.
Flat tops and shorter sides
with longer hair on top are
also very popular. Many men
enjoy bi-level cuts, with short
er hair around their face but
longer in back.
According to local salons,
women are still using a lot of
accessories in their hair.
Combs have replaced last
years banana clips, and jewel
ry and ribbons have replaced
big bows.
All this styling can have in
jurious side effects. Because
of this there is now a bigger

emphasis on healthy hair.

more, many women are opting for a softer look.

The United States no longer
lags behind Europe in fashion
according to stylist John
Muckerman. Because the
world has become so small,
hairstylists from all over the
world attend the same shows
and learn the same tech
niques. He added that any dif
ferences are not due to lack
of techniques or knowledge
but rather that the people
maybe are not as daring.
Muckerman added that hair
cannot stand alone. "There is
a whole, complete look to go
after, not just hair--to make a
statement. Fashion is becom
ing a real element in our soci
ety. One’s image in college
has a big influence on one’s
life.”
He suggests that people
talk to professionals who can
help them decide on the style
that is right for them.
