Performer redefining male roles ! Calls most men overgrown boys By Betsy Clayton Emerald Associate Editor Andre Carpenter is in search of males who are men, not males who are over-grown boys. "Most adult males have basi cally boyish attitudes,” he said, and this is creating prob lems for societies in cultures around the world. "If we don't change we are all dead. If there are not more men in society, the society will collapse. It’s a disaster," he said. To be a man, a male must have a true sense of autonomy and must be responsive to soci ety. Carpenter said this is ex tremely important because the lack of real, balanced men in modern society is contributing to escalating global problems, such as war, viruses and eco logical situations. Carpenter lias followed his quest for a definition of man since his teen years. "I was aware that I was a male but that I was a boy. Male is just a mam mal term, it doesn’t make you a man," he said. "But I wanted to become a man. In a male boy adolescence I knew there must be a latent man." Changing from a male teen ager to a man is like the trails formation from a bud to a blooming flower. "But bow do you become a man? How do you make sure the flower will bloom?” ho questioned. To understand the blooming transition. Carpenter said he looks at primitive societies. In there societies, there are puber ty rites of passages boys experi ence to become men. "We no longer go through these in modern times in civilized soci ety," he said. For example, he cited Native American cultures that re quired boys be sent away for a time alone to survive in nature. Because there was no one to rescue them, it involved total courage. Carpenter explained "Primitive cultures seem to know there are certain things to be awakened before a boy can be a man." Although courage is just one characteristic, it illustrates that an awareness of a male's capa bilities and self is essential to becoming a balanced man. Car penter said.
