Track team expectations not as high as in '84 B.v Jack Millikin Emerald Contributor Following the 1984 National Col legiate Athletic Association Track and Field Championships at Eugene’s Hayward Field. Oregon coach Bill Dellinger left the track contented, happy, relieved — and soaking wet. His men had just won the team championship. The team then treated Dellinger to a nice, unex pected bath ... at the bottom of the steeplechase pit. There was good reason for celebration, however. The Ducks had not been favored to win. Ken Flax scored the team's first points with a seventh-place finish in the hammer, and the Duck men just followed his lead. Joaquim Cru/ swept the 800- and 1.500-meter races, Dub Myers took third in the 1.500. Kory Tarpenning earned a second place in the pole vault and Brian Crouser finished fourth in the javelin. Other impressive perfor mances came from Jim Hill, Matt McGuirk. and Harold Kuphaldt. The rest is history . “1 believed we had a gtxxl chance at the title in '84," Dellinger said. “Everybody thought it was going to be Washington State or Arkansas. I think we more or less snuck up on everybody." The 1984 NCAA championship at Hayward Field clearly illustrated the power of the underdog. The Duck men and women were boosted by the vociferous home crowd, which will most likely be just as loud for this year's NCAA meet. Oregon State's Karl Van Calcar, then a freshman, suprised virtually everyone with his high finish. This year, however. Van Calcar should suprise no one, being the favorite Like 1984, the Oregon women have qualified a strong distance crew (Hand. Penny Graves, and Li/: Wilson) which should score well, However, this year the women also have another strength — Camille Jampolsky. Jampolsky has qualified in the high and long jumps, and should fare well in both events For the men, unlike 1984. the team's strength seems to lie in the field events. Hopes will rest on Latin Berry, who qualified in both the* long and triple jumps. Jose dcSouza will contend for points in the shot put and discus. What seems a mystery for the men this year is the relatively low number of qualifiers in the running events. Of the runners that did qualify, none will dominate the field as did the Ducks in 1984. ‘‘The 1984 teams had some great runners," said Graves. "I think the reason they did so well was a com bination of running in a big meet and the fact that it was in Eugene. This year we ll just go out and do as well as we can." A likely question for this year's meet would be: "Can the Duck track and field teams match their 1984 performances?” fail's sec , In Eugene? Yes. Big meet? Definitely. Great run ners? Fans will have to wait for the end of the meet to find that out \burFeet1 Never Felt This Good BIRKENSTOCK OF EUGENE 207 E. 5IH SUITE #107 • EUGENE • OR • 97401 *(503) 342-6107 Mon.-Sal. 9:00 am-6:00 pm • Sun. 12:00-5:00 pm • Toll Free 1 -800-451 -1459 CCM )KIHS • PA ST R IKS • 'IX )R'1f BREADS • CROISSANTS I )A V CAKES • CINNAMC )N R()LLS • CHOCOLATE CHIP C()OKIKS I FRUIT TARTS • ETC'. • ETC./ FALL CREEK BAKERY Nhl l.iisl 1.>||| IK'\| lo llii | ul ( > llnnkslmv • ()|k ii Mniidny-I'ricUiy H-(>, Suiunlm K-tt
