A—10,400 Women wage Civil War tonight to close roller-coaster season By Craig Harris Emerald Sports Reporter After a season of battles, it's now time for the war — the Civil War. The Oregon women’s basketball team, wrapping up a season of roller-coaster ups and downs, concludes its home schedule tonight against intrastate rival Oregon State at 7:30 in McArthur Court. The two teams will meet again a week from now in Corvallis for the final game of the year. The Ducks won seven of their first 10 games this season but then lost seven of the next 10, and are now 7-9 in the conference and 14-14 overall. They are in a position to finish anywhere from fourth to eighth in the Pacific-10 Conference. If Oregon pulls off a sweep against OSU, it would end up no lower than fifth place and possibly a notch higher if UCLA loses its final four games. But if they drop the pair, the Ducks could see themselves only two steps above the cellar. "Besides being the Civil War, this game really means something.” said Oregon coach Elwin Heiny. "If we go out winning we will be better than .500 and it would guarantee a fifth place spot. We also have the potential to finish fourth, which is quite an accomplishment.” he added. Finishing fourth would be an accomplish ment because the conference coaches predicted in a preseason poll that Oregon would finish no higher than sixth. While Oregon is fighting to get into the up per division. Oregon State is fighting to gain respectability. The Beavers lost three starters before the season started and the three freshmen that moved into those slots are now all injured. All of which has resulted in 10-16 record and plenty of frustration forOSU mentor Aki Hill ’ It’s very frustrating, but the team is good to come back strong every week,” Hill said. ‘‘We are going to go out and fight hard. It’s not much fun to lose again." But while the Beavers’ lineup may have become a M.A.S.H. unit. Oregon isn’t exactly healthy either. Guard Jennifer Bourn had knee surgery this week and is out for the year. Trina McCartney, who emerged as one of the team’s best re bounders, has hobbled all week in practice because of a right ankle strain. And Sheila Sat tiewhite. who became the number-three player on the all-time assist chart last weekend, hasn't practiced all week because of ligament strains in her right foot. Heiny said both McCartney and Sat tiewhite are expected to play, but because of the missed practice time, senior forward Amy Petterson will get the starting nod. "Amy can really contribute. We are going to try to get her the ball and she can give us a shot and really help us." Heiny said. Along with the 6-foot-3 Petterson, Heiny will place two more towers in the post: t»-foot-7 Stefanie Kasperski and forward Kris Glidden. who also stands 6-foot-3. Only two Oregon State players are listed at Turn fo Basketball, Page 16 Personals PROBLEMS?
