Endowment to fund visiting international studies chair By Ted Fuller Emerald Contributor Students majoring in interna tional studies may get the chance to study under a former ambassador or world statesper son, thanks to a $500,000 en dowment unveiled Tuesday by University President Paul Olum. About 50 faculty members, past administrators, students and reporters attended a press conference called to announce the Carlton Raymond and Wilberta Ripley Endowed Visiting Professorship in Inter national Relations and Peace, named for the donor and his late wife. The endowment was a gift from Carlton Savage, 90. a former assistant secretary of state who grew up in Salem and graduated from the University with a bachelor's degree in 1921. Known for his instrumen tal roles in the formation of the United Nations in 1945 and the Marshall Plan in 1947. Savage retired in 1962 after working 36 years for the U.S. State Depart ment. He now lives in Washington, D.C. appointed the selection com mittee. Donald Van Houten. dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the committee's chair, offered ideas as to what the University will be able to do with the professorship. “We’ve been a university with international interests and concerns for a long time,” Van Houten said. He said the gift would allow the University to bring to campus a well-known public figure, "who may be a scholar and or a statesperson, possibly a current ambassador or former ambassador." or a faculty member from another university. He refused to iden tify any possible candidates, saying the selection committee would have to meet first. Carlton Savage “This is a marvelous gift, and an exciting one for us.” Olum said, adding that the professor ship will benefit the Univer sity’s recently established Peace Studies Program. “To have a visiting professor ship, to be able to have a distinguished person come every year to lecture on the sub ject of international relations and peace, is going to be a wonderful addition to that pro gram," Olum said. Although Olum just recently Wilberta Ripley Savage How long the visiting pro fessors would stay would de pend on their schedules, Van Houten said. Regardless of whether it would be a month or a semester, he said he hoped the professors could give at least one, if not several, public lec tures the "academic community would enjoy and profit by." Van Houten said Savage’s re quest for the professorship to focus on both the Pacific Basin and human rights should be easy for the University to imple ment. He cited several courses and programs already in place, including the University's par ticipation with the University of Washington and University of British Columbia in the newly formed Northwest Consortium on Southeast Asian Studies. He said money would be set aside for such seminars. Savage, who fought for students' rights for self gover nance while serving as student body president at the Universi ty, also specified that students should be involved in the selec tion of the visiting professors, according to Alison Baker, ex ecutive assistant to President Olum.
