University President Paul Olum, a member of the Soviet Sister City Project's advisory board, said he also hopes ex changes between the two universities will take place. "Anything that furthers inter national understanding and cooperation is something to strive for. . You are less likely to have hostile feelings,” Olum said. The idea of a Soviet sister city began in November, 198H. Members of the proposed Soviet Sister City Project began collec ting letters of support from various Eugene organizations and individuals. The project was then officially approved by Mayor Brian Obie and the City Council on May 13. On May 21. six members from the project's board of directors traveled to Seattle to attend the Soviet-Ameriean Sister Cities Conference. At the conference, the members met with Yuri Menshikov of the Association for Relations between Soviet and Foreign Cities and inform ed him of their request to add a .Soviet sister city. Menshikov forwarded their request to the city of Irkutsk, and Wednesday the Eugene City Council made that request for mal by agreeing to send a letter of invitation. According to Gessert, Obie initially had reservations about the project, fearing that Irkutsk was located too far away from Moscow and that interest in the project would decline over the years. As a result, Obie asked that Gessert prepare a 20-name list of people who would be willing to travel to the city over the next five years. Gessert said she had the list completed within the hour. However, on Wednesday the mayor was nothing but op timistic about the project. "I am tremendously en thusiastic about this sister city relationship and have become convinced. I am determined to make it a success... I was very concerned that we hold up our end and have appropriate representation to travel as a group for the next five years.” ()hie said. Some of the upcoming events scheduled by the project are a photo exhibit composed of pic tures taken by Soviet children and a delegation of Soviet athletes who will travel to Eugene in May.
