(.rattan Kerens (D-Eugene) as legislator of the Year Satur day at the club's annual awards banquet in Portland. It is the first such award given to a legislator by the Oregon Sierra Club, the state chapter of the national environmental group. The Oregon club’s membership is about 6,700. "The reason why we made the decision is because of his politics) courage in this last ses sion on environmental issues." said John Christenson, a club executive board member who presented the award. Christenson said Kerans par ticularly was courageous in fighting House |oint Resolution 41. a measure eventually passed by the Legislature that requires the state departments of forestry and fish and wildlife to issue a joint response to federal plans for forestry and wildlife in Oregon's region. Critics claim the measure gives forestry of ficials the upper hand in deci sion making. The measure was backed by the governor and the Democratic leadership. Kerens also introduced a wetlands mitigation law and backed placing restrictions on the use of pesticides. Janet Kerans accepted the award for her husband, who is in Washington, D.C., on legislative business. "This award .. .is not given out every year. It's a very special award," said Deanna Hinton, the club conserva tionalist chairwoman. “We aren't taking 10 people and selecting one out of 10 people. We’re waiting until somebody has the integrity that we feel is worthy of our award." In honor of the magazine’s birthday, former editors and authors spoke about the magazine's past and read favorite excerpts from previous magazine editions. The magazine, which is cir culated in :t8 different coun tries, "is a miracle of volunteerism," said Witte, thanking everyone who has helped to make the magazine work. "Northwest Review is sort of a literary salon where editors and writers gather to discuss important political, social and literary issues,” Witte said. The reading, which took place in the University's Alum ni Ixiunge, featured former editors Ralph Salisbury, John Haislip. Michael Strolow, Witte and fiction editor Cecelia liagen. In addition, authors Ken Kesey, Madeline DeFrees and Charles O. Porter gave brief readings at the gathering.
