Seniors defensive captain Anthony Newman and offen sive tackle Jeff Stefanick ex pressed the same amount of pride after the game. "The underclassmen don’t realize how important the game is. I can say that I never lost to the Beavers for the rest of my life," Newman said. "VVe didn't want to be the ones to end the streak. In a game like this people develop a deep passion, and we per formed better under the cir cumstances," Stefanick said. Along with the records, Oregon established a single season attendance average of 39,298, and kicker kirk Den nis broke records for both field goals attempted and made for one season Dennis' three for three boots of 28. 49, and 39 yards respec tively, helped Oregon tie a 1895 record for the largest blowout in Civil War history After Dennis’s 28 yarder, which put Oregon ahead 10-0, the Beavers ‘‘Air Express" deflated On third down and 10 from the 20 yard line, noseguard Rollin Putzier and defensive end Matt Brock blitzed though the line and sacked quarterback Erik Whilhelm, spraining his ankle W'hilhelm then limped off the field and never returned. The Beavers then punted and Oregon’s Terry Obee returned the ball to the OSU 8-yard line. Two plays later Derek loville scampered for his se cond touchdown of the day and the Ducks were up 17-0 Ioville rushed for 103 yards for the day, a first time this season he hit the *100’ plateau ‘‘It feels real good to get 100, especially against the Beavers.” Loville said "We took out our frustrations on the Beavers " On the ensuing series, the depth-shy Beavers placed Kent Riddle at quarterback, a freshman who had previously played only five minutes against Washington. Riddle couldn't lead much better than Wilhelm, as the Beavers lost 4 yards in three plays and punted again. The Ducks took over inside midfield and marched 4‘t yards in eight plays, seven of those rushing plays, and went up 24-0 on l^tin Berry's 8-yard run The Civil War now started looking like a rout. The Thicks ended their first half massacre with a field goal, pushing the margin to 27-0. The Ducks continued their tirade in the third quarter when quarterback Bill Musgrave hit Joe Meerten for his 13th touchdown pass of the year, and Dennis kicked his third field goal of the day stretching the lead to 37-0. Midway through the third quarter Oregon eurnerback Ron Gould drilled Riddle, knocking him out of the game The Beavers then placed James Castle, who never played quarterback at the | V or varsity level, at the helm And surprisingly, he finished with better numbers than his predecessors, going six for Hi attempts for 4B yards total Although Castle moved the1 ball he ciidn't make a dent in the scoring. Oregon State's lone hope of avoiding a shutout c ame toward the end of game when Robb Thomas returned a kick off after Oregon's fames Harper's touchdown. But the 96-yard return was called liack after a clipping t ail at midfield "That kind of typified the whole day for us VVe wanted to at least score to make it respectable, but what do you say7 The team's just not get ting it done." Thomas said The Heavers finished the season 2-9. and have only won eight games since Dave kragthorpe took the helm three years ago. For the Ducks. Wrestlers defeat Bakersfield in Pac-10 opener By Kevin Allen Emerald Contributor A young Oregon wrestling team opened its Pacific-10 Con ference season with an im pressive win over conference newcomer Cal State-Bakersfield Sunday afternoon at McArthur Court. The Ducks ran over the Koadrunners 22-14 to improve to 2-0 for the year, while Bakersfield fell to 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-10. The Koadrunners are cham pions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II wrestling, and had beaten the Ducks in five consecutive prior meets Bakersfield moved into the Pac-10 wrestling conference and Division I this season. “They are a tough team," Oregon coach Ron Finley said "They've beaten Portland State, and Oregon State. (The win) is a good indicator where we might stand in the conference. " The Ducks took victories in six of 10 matches in the meet, and recorded two superior deci sions by Vince Hochanadel and Chuck Kearney. The Ducks started off with a 7-6 match vic tory by Jerry Valencia in the 118-pound weight class that Finley said led the Ducks to realize they could beat Bakersfield. The second match (126 pounds) featured one of the most exciting comebacks of the afternoon when YVebfoot James Hawthorne fell behind 7-1 in the second period to Roadrun ner Mike Dallas only to defeat him in the third 11-9 Oregon took the lead in the meet K-0. “(Hawthorne wrestled) a tough last period,” Finley said.
