AIDS Continued from Page 4 work cannot be undertaken because of the lack of available resources.” Shilts also added that the memo was written four days after Brandt testified before a House subcommittee that all emergency funding for AIDS was "unnecessary." The final factor .Shilts cited, the ‘ human factor," involved Claetan Dugas, considered by some to be "the man who started it all.” Also known as Patient Zen). Dugas is believed to be respon sible for at least 40 of the first 248 cases of AIDS diagnosed in homosexual men in the U.S. Shilts. who included Dugas' story in his book, said he discovered the Patient Zero fac tor when a doctor in New York mentioned that two of the first AIDS cases in the U.S. had the same mutual relationship with the same man. This information sent Shilts on a path of inter views to discover what appears to be a case of mass murder with sex as the weapon. Dugas, an Air Canada flight steward, allegedly lured other gay men into having sex with him. even after he was informed in 1082 of his contagious condi tion, Shilts said Shilts explained that Dugas apparently roamed gay bathhouses and gay clubs, hav ing casual sex with other men. After having sex, Dugas would turn on the lights, point to the purple lesions on his inner thighs and inform his partner, "I've got gay cancer I'm going to die and so are you." At the time of his AIDS related death in March, 1084. Dugas reportedly hail had sex with at least 2,500 partners in the previous 10 years, Shilts said. Shilts said Dugas is likely the man who first introduced AIDS to North America, possibly leading to tens of thousands of reported AIDS cases Through his book, Shilts is seeking help from political, medical and social groups by expanding public awareness. Shilts said he is satisfied «ith the amount of money the II S. government currently spends on research on AIDS and AIDS Related Complex, adding that more education is needed. "AIDS can be prevented through education." Shilts said "It's not like the plague where anyone could catch it Preventive measures can stop the expansion of AIDS, and the best way is through educ at ion Shilts said he hopes AIDS and AIDS education will Is- impor tant issues during next year's presidential elections. Although he doesn't laslieve a cun- for AIDS will ever be found. Shilts said that with the help of federal research funds. AIDS will someday be a "disease like diabetes." a disease that is controlled through proper medication and education. Olum Continued from Page I would bring the University faculty into a formal move ment against the state board "If you step bac k and think about it. it's a real drastic thing for the faculty and/or the students to vote that they don't have confidence in the people who are governing them." Gaffney said Some senate members ex pressed doubt that the mo tion would force any change, but Gaffney defended it as the only way students can of ficially protest against the state board She also referred to Goldsc hmidt as the "only recourse we have now If Goldschmidt ignores the issue, legal action may he taken against the state board, according to f'rymoyer However. Krymoyer could not offer details on this par ticular plan-H. other than to say “we have a pretty strong case for them having violated open meeting laws " Goldschmidt is coming to Eugene today for the YMt'A Centennial celebration Stu dent leaders are planning a rally at <> to this evening in front of the Eugene Milton, where the celebration will be held For now, senate members are entertaining faint hopes that the state board might rescind its decision to retire Olum "We still urgently need to get the board to reconsider its decision." Gaffney told the senate Student leaders .ire an ticipating a year-long struggle "If the support keeps growing they're not going to keep ignoring us." Krymoyer said G&ssifieds Personals PROBLEMS?
