Cold shooting seals doom in exhibition opener By Cary Henley Emerald Sports Reporter The Australian flags were waving with pride Friday night in McArthur Court as the II lawarra (Sydney) Hawks spoil ed Oregon's season opener by defeating the Ducks 80-67 in overtime men’s basketball action. lllawarra pressured Oregon all night, forcing 26 Duck tur novers and holding Oregon to a .371 (23-62) field goal percentage. It may have been a case of the opening game jitters as the Ducks played sloppy basketball for the first 15 minutes of the contest before coming back from a seemingly insurmoun table lead. The crowd of 6,782 watched the Aussies hop out to a 10-0 lead behind the scoring of two American players, Alphonse Hammond and Steve Carfino. Hammond poured in 18 points and shot 71 percent from the floor; Carfino, a former stan dout guard at Iowa, chipped in 17 points. 14 in the second half, and went four-for-four from three-point country The Ducks went scoreless for nearly four minutes before Ran dy Grant took a Kick Osborn pass and scored on a driving lay-in for the Ducks' first points of the season. With 6:57 remaining in the first half, Oregon coach Don Monson cleared the floor and brought in five reserves from the bench. The Hawks' lead reached 17 points before the Oregon subs warmed up and outscored the Aussies 15-6 to pull within five points at halftime. The Hawks continued to pressure Oregon's offense throughout the second half, but the Ducks responded well, stay ing within striking distance behind the quickness of guards Anthony Taylor and Frank Johnson. With 2:42 remaining in regulation however, the Hawks' Ken Stone performed his ver sion of the "thundering Aussie” dunk, putting lllawarra up 61-51. The Ducks mounted a rally, and after Steve Ranniger hit a three-point shot, Oregon trailed 61-58 Carfino missed a foul shot at the other end, and Ranniger came back and drilled another three from the right corner to tie the score at 61 with 48 se< onds left. Duck grapplers pin down upset The Oregon wrestling team opened its 1987 campaign with a 30-15 upset victory over host Portland State Friday night. The Ducks achieved wins in six weight classes, one by default, and easily beat the Vik ings, who led 6-0 after the first match. The meet see-sawed back and forth until Oregon won the last three matches to put PSU away. lnividual winners for coach Ron Finley’s squad were James Hawthorne (118 lbs., injury default), Glenn Jarrett (134 lbs., decision), Vince Hochanadel (158 lbs., decision). Chuck Kearney (177 lbs., pin). Curt Strahm (190 lbs. decision) and Cam Strahm (heavyweight, pin). Carfino's loaning jumper in the key missed at the buzzer, and the teams headed to overtime. The Ducks faltered from the opening tip in overtime, and Australia's Hammond took over, scoring nine points as the Hawks pulled away for the win "It’s disappointing." r Balderston said after the game "Wo didn’t execute at all offen sively. That was evident. We need to start playing tetter and become more solid all over." Munson was a little less con cerned "There were a lot of disappointing things, but there were some good things too The young kids played well Grant 1 played a good game. Johnson has a ways to go. and Brett (Cof fey didn’t get to play that much tonight. “When you fall behind so much so fast, they can do anything they want. They zon ed the whole game, and that hurt us.
