School trades in typewriters for technology By Ingrid Petersen Emerald Reporter The University's School of (ournalism has now entered the technological world of the 1980s, thanks to recent dona tions financing the purchase of state-of-the-art computer facilities for the school's repor t i n g and news editing laboratories. I’aul Holbo. University vice provost. along with other ad ministrators. alumni, pro fessors, students and members of various journalism organiza tions. took time to dedicate the two new laboratories to prin cipal financers of the lab's equipment Oct. 23 in Allen Hall. The University has jumped from the 1950s to the 1980s. totally avoiding the '60s or the '70s. Holho said, referring to the school's new and old equipment. "As late as last summer students were using manual typewriters manufactured in the 1950s," said journalism pro fessor Koy Halverson, a key figure in the school's transition to computerized laboratories Photo bt Hobble lo Reporting and editing classes in the School of loumalism have been updated with a new com puter system. Mr and Mrs Wesley | Sullivan of Salem and Ted M Natt, editor and publisher of the Longview. Wash . Daily News Mainwaring contributed $05,000 in memory of her late husband. Hernard. who was editor and publisher of the Salem Capital Journal until the time of his death in 1050 The Sullivans provided a challenge grant of $20,000 .ind Natt eon trubuted $0,000 lo the computer fund The Sullivans and Natt are alumni of the School of Journalism. In addition, the (iannott Foundation will matt ti portions of the Mainwarmg and Sullivan contributions, which will add an additional $55,000 to the computer fund The reporting lab. which is currently accommodating three reporting classes, is equipped with IBM terminals.
