□THINGS TO DO
Area merchants have books covered
Whether you need to buy textbooks for
classes, or you just like to read for enjoyment, you
need to know where to go to find what you're
looking for.
The University of Oregon Bookstore, located
at the corner of 13th and Kincaid, is the most
convenient bookstore, not only for students, but

for the public as well. The store has a textbook
section and an extensive general book section.
Employee Chris Standish of the textbook sec
tion says there are usually 3.000-4.000 textbooks
in stock, depending on the number of courses and
faculty requests. Approximately one-third of the
textbooks are used. Students, faculty, and staff
receive an 11 percent discount on new and used
books. Standish says buy-backs for both new and
used books are one-half of the new selling price,
‘‘so you don't wind up spending that much on us
ed books." he said.
The general book section carries about
:t5.000 titles in 85 sections, according to
employee Mike Pritiken.
"The biggest sections would be children's
and literature. We also have a large selection of
computer books." Pritikin said. The general sec
tion also carries calenders and postcards.

Although students often complain about a lack
of time for outside reading, many Eugene area
bookstores provide a variety of books. B
Dalton's, a nationwide chain, offers
everything from literature to computer texts.

will be 12:30 p.m.to 5 p.m. on September 27, and

Smith Family Bookstore, at 768 E. 13th Ave.,
is the main competitor with the Universtiy
Bookstore for school textbook sales. Smith Family
specializes in used texts, both buying and selling.
Co-owner Misa Smith says more and more
students have come to Smith Family every year
since the store opened at its current location in
1977 (it originally opened in 1974 on Alder
Street). Smith Family has another, smaller store
one block from the Fifth Street Public Market, at
160 E. Fifth Ave.
The store currently has 250,000 to 300.000
books in stock "on all subjects," Smith said.
"We sell and buy track books at competitive
prices,” she said, adding that the prices are
"almost the same" as the University Bookstore
prices.
Smith Family also offers a large selection of
non-school (rooks and magazines (such as Sports
Illustrated. Time, National Geographic, etc.) at
discount prices. Used paperbacks are listed at
half-price.
The store is open Monday through Saturday,
9 a m to 5:30 p m.
