The doctor was so impressed with the view from the summit that he named the butte in honor of then-Secretary of War John C. Spencer. Located at the base of Spencer Butte is the South Hills Kidgeline Trail. The three and one-half mile trail offers spec tacular views of the Cascades, the Coburg Hills and Ml Haldy. and a profusion of flora and fauna. Douglas firs are the most com mon trees along the trail while the Spencer Butte region of the trail is said to have the largest variety of ferns than any other single spot in Oregon Trilliums. fawn lilies and fairy slipper orchids are some of the wildflowors found in the area But poison oak is prevalent in the area, so use caution when venturing off the trail.
