ASUO President Kasey Brooks. Vice President Karen Gaffney, Kvents Coor dinator Angelina Chong, In cidental Fee Committee member Armando Morales. Stu dent Senate Chairwoman Karen Frymoyer. Insurance Commit tee member Katy Howard, and former ASUO Vice President Caitlin Cameron will join 300-400 students from college campuses nationwide at the week-long conference. This will be the ninth year of the University's involvement in the national student lobbying association, Cameron said. The summer congress includes workshops on the lies! way to lobby stale congressmen and how to be strong student leaders. It also provides an op portunity to exchange ideas with other student leaders, vote on bylaw and platform changes and elect the USSA Hoard of Directors, president, vice presi dent and executive committee, shir added Cameron called the congress mostly informational “Student governments come back to their own campuses and know the issues." she said. Stu dent leaders also have ideas on what kind of strategies to use in certain situations, she added Cameron and Howard both serve on the Intard of directors. Former University student and ASUO Events Coordinator Don na Cooper also served on the board, but was unable to make the trip to Madison, (’hong is going as Cooper's replacement. Three representatives from one school on the 35-member board shows the University's high involvement with USSA. Howard said. “It has given us a strong voice on the national hoard of direc tors." she said, adding the Eugene area and Nor thwest Pacific region was well represented last year. USSA has "all kinds of stuff" to offer student leaders and stu dent governments. Cameron said. "Primarily, there are three things USSA offers campuses.” she said. "It's a recognized voice in Washington. IJ.C. Through USSA, your voice can la? heard in Washington, U.C." Cameron also mentioned the "amazing information base" provided by the organization's legislative updates, informing students of who to contact for A/OtVO Owners A^n^^ort / /Serviced Offers a FREE Safety Inspection Can lor an appointment Springfield • 12th & Mam • 72b 1808 ALL WORK GUARANTEED L VOLVO, _emu Lunch made for a king K l r * $2.95 Open 7 am-2 pm Monday Friday • Steak • 3 bean or potato salad • French fries Fountain Court Cafe Quatihf fmd at £m Pnimf Ork;o\ Wi-st TANNING $2 j Mr wm#, sny (Uf pOl % MtIWM «W 1IM Vi Price SALE SunShowcr on campu* «M >ui • »;• E im Up»l»M by Kmkoi action on specific isses and what is happening in the na tion's Congress. The third aspect Cameron mentioned was the help given in leadership skills, specifically stress and time management. "The thing is, it's all op tional," she said. "You get out of it what you want to get out of it.” Some schools are more passive in their involvement, but others, like the University are more active, she said. The active schools get members elected to the board and “spearhead the fight.” she said. Uaffney said she personally is looking forward to meeting other student leaders and hav ing the opportunity to brainstorm on some important national issues. “It's an important opportuni ty for an exhange of ideas." she said. Hrooks said she is excited there are members from the ASUO Executive, the IFC and Student Senate going on the trip, she said. It will be a time for representatives of the three branches to network ideas and get to know each other outside of the politics of the ASUO, she said. Frymoyer, who is taking her first USSA trip, also is looking forward to that aspect of the trip as well as the actual USSA pro cess. she said. "I'm interested in seeing how USSA works and what it has to offer us." she said. She hopes to take what she learns there and apply it to her work with the Student Senate this fall, she added. Hrooks and Gaffney have ex pressed concern about involve ment in USSA in the past. Hut Gaffney hopes those concerns are dispelled, and Hrooks has no reservations about going, they said. "Jhe University nationally has a reputation for having a very strong student govern ment," Gaffney said. "Hopeful ly. this is a chance to become even stronger," Open 24 Hours kinko's Great copies Great people 860 E 15th 544 7894 FALAFEL $1.95 ml coupon Fotolo). »ogfli«, 4 rooty cucumber snuco Hutted in hot pit* brood STUrr IT EATERY • 1218 Aider !
