Sophomore lay Davis used his third and final attempt to clear 17-5V«. the NCAA-qualifying standard, while Mark Dunbar and |im Smith squeaked under at 1.500 meters in the last event of the meet, which was the final competition of the regular season. Davis appeared to clear the bar on his first try at the qualify ing height, but the bar bounced off the support after he had already landed in the pit, After missing badly on his second at tempt. Davis passed over the bar unscathed to earn a trip to this year's NCAA title meet, to be hold next week in Baton Rouge. !<a. "I really thought I had it on this first one. oven though I knew I had hit the bar." Davis said. "I pulled back on the last one. and when I saw the bar go under me I knew I had the space," he continuer!. Dunbar and Smith followed the quick lead of Arizona's Mark Oleson through the first three laps, then fell in behind Washington's Bruce Stirling as he kicked coming into the last curve.
