Surgeon General C. Everett koop and Secretary of Educa tion William Bennett have warned. "AIDS education that accepts. . . sexual activity as in evitable and focuses only on 'safe sex’ will be at lies! ineffec tual. and worst, itself a cause of serious harm. Young people should be taught that the best precaution is abstinence until it is possible to establish a mutually faithful monogamous relationship." (Education Week, Feb. 11, 1987) Dr. koop has stated. “Morali ty and science go hand in hand lie's right. The idea that one can have sex recreationally and not establish a lasting marriage commitment is very, very dangerous. The sexual revolu tion is the reason many serious diseases am thriving in our nation. In order for venereal diseases to flourish, they require new hosts furnished through promiscuity. If people practiced complete sexual monogamy, V.D. would become extinct as soon as those already infected passed on. Michael Gross Political Science/History graduate Saving forests In the far corner of Southwest Oregon lies one of the largest and most diverse remaining old growth forests in the state the North kalmiopsis. This roadless area of approx imately 200.(HK) acres is located between the existing Wild Rogue and kalmiopsis wilderness areas. The North r kalmiopsis is a botanical paradise, containing many rare and endangered plant species. It is also the home of abun dant wildlife and threatened species such as the spotted owl Numerous rivers and streams lace the area and provide a challenging white water ex perience. such as the Illinois River The area is truly deserv ing of some form of permanent protection. Unfortunately, the Forest Ser vice has plans to extensively road and log the North Kalmiopsis over the next few years. Only concerned citizen response can keep this from happening. In an effort to protect this area, environmental groups and citizens from around the state have proposed the Siskiyou Na tional Park. This proposal would protect the existing wilderness areas, and also would protect the North Kalmiopsis But the Forest Service needs to hear from you. Write to Forest Supervisor Ron McCor mick. Siskiyou National Forest. PO Box 440. ('.rants Pass. OR. 97520 Ask him to protect the North Kalmiopsis from reading and logging, and to study the park proposal in the forest plan ning process. It's revealing that his quoted sources of enlightenment were: 1) A 1960s hippie agitator, and 2) a 1960s science-fiction writer (perhaps we'd call that the "old left"). At least he didn't stoop to the old 'F' word as another of these personal attack letters did. . .and wow, we all know just what a persuasive intellec tual air-tight argument that is! These personal attack and name-calling methods employed by so many Universi ty letter writers against the "new right" are typical. Is this because these writers’ counter ideas just don't bear up under logical argument? Instead of simply attacking people, why don’t you try presenting some realistic, wor thy alternative thoughts and solutions. Finally, here's a thought for you "left" to chew on — it ap plies to much of the liberal ad vocacy agenda including homosexuality, abortion-on demand. quota hiring, "value free" sex, and generational welfare: A society will not long thrive that is socialistically structured such as to demand its responsible citizens finance the consequences of its irresponsi ble citizens. |on Wollander Eugene Vocabulary In response to the letter on terminology |OI)K.
