The giants from down south in liOs Angeles, USCand UCLA, are expected to duke it out while the rest of the conference buckles up and watches from the back seat. "If we can perform well all down the line,” said Heinonen, "we’ll have a great chance to be third if either SC or UCLA stumble.” Oregon, 6-0, will bring 24 athletes, the Pac-10 limit, and hope for the best. The situation sounds like Pac-10 football, minus the state of Arizona, but this is the same Duck squad that upended defending outdoor champion University of Texas at the Pepsi Invitational, in addition to runner-up University of Tennessee. Oregon alsd belongs to the Pac-10, arguably the top women's track and field con tingent in the nation. For starters the Pac-10 placed five teams-USC(14th). Stanford University (6th), UCLA (17th). Washington State University (10th) and Oregon-among the top 18 at the NCAA outdoor meet a year ago. Heinonen, who sees "USC and UCLA going tooth and nail," gives the Trojans the slightest edge, because they nipped the Bruins 69-67 earlier in the year. "USC has a small team, but it’s elite." said the llth-year coach, whose 1985 team cap tured the NCAA outdoor cham pionship. He also pointed out the Trojans may bring only 15 or 16 competitors, but they "are essentially all full-ride athletes. Everyone is capable of scoring and maybe scoring a lot." Meanwhile. UCLA figures to come away with more than a fair share of individual victories at the finals Saturday at Wayne Valley Field in Corvallis. The Ducks produced four in dividual champions and broke Washington State University's three-year grip on the Pac-10 ti tle a year ago. but UCLA enters today's competition favored to claim its first conference cham pionship since 1982. The meet begins at noon today with the hammer and continues through Saturday afternoon. " Based on the marks this year and what’s on paper, you have to give them (UCLA) the edge, but they were favored last year, too. and we won it,” noted Oregon head coach Bill Dellinger. "Someone is going to have to break in on UCLA in the sprints.” said Dellinger, who returns just one individual champion (pole vaulter Tim Canfield) from last season, lie hopes it is the Ducks, with the help of senior Mark Dannis (100 and 200 meters, relays), junior Pat tanning (200, 400, relays), and freshman Larry Williams (400. 1000 relay). Dannis holds the field’s fifth best time at 100 meters, while i.anning enters the meet with the number-four 400-meter time in the conference. They will be hard-pressed to overcome the Bruins' triple threat of Mike Marsh, Henry Thomas, and Danny Fverett.
