An enthusiastic crowd of 6.392 packed the east grands tand to salute the Oregon track and field legacy, and to pay tribute to some of the greatest miters the world has ever known in the Bud Light legends Mile. I honored, and rose to a roar as Myers held off the challenges of kuphaldt, Bergesen and Blackmore to capture the jewel of the evening, as well as a place in the record books. Myers held off the late challenges of Kuphaldt (3:59.73) and Bergesen (3:59.79) to win in 3:59.40. Blackmore, the 1985 champion, finished fourth in 3:59.88. "It's funny, but I haven't thought of this in terms of a record or anything," said Myers, who along with Blackmore ran under four minutes for the fourth time in the Twilight, surpassing the record previously shared with the late Steve Prefontaine. "It was just another mile race, and I'm glad I ran well. The guy I'm really happy for is my room mate (Kuphaldt). He's been try ing for four years and he finally got it." Kuphaldt. who established the pace by loading the field around the first lap in 80.1 seconds, was ecstatic. "We didn’t have any plan going in. but we talked to each other dur ing the race, trying to keep everyone accountable for the time My whole family was here; my friends were here — I just felt like I had to do it.” After congratulating Kuphaldt and Bergesen. an emotional coach Bill Dellinger searched for the words to ex press the mood of the evening. "It's an affair, not just a track meet. It's great for these kids. Not just the milors, but everybody here. It's great for the tradition." he said. A new tradition may have been added, if fan and partici pant response to the Bud Light Legends Mile is any indication. Running in the shadow of some of the most famous names in track. Albuquerque. N.M., native Web Ixrndat emerged as the victor, crossing in 4:20.89. "I was running along think ing 'there's Jim Ryun and Gerry Lindgren and Bob Shul'. but it took awhile to realize what that meant." Loudat said. "I must have raced (iin Ryun 60 times in college, and 1 never even came close to beating him.” Ryun. who was running his first competitive race since 1973, was content to circle the oval at a more leisurely pace. He ran in the middle of the pack throughout the race before finishing seventh (4:30.98) in the 15-man field. "Physically, I felt good, but there was something in the competitive aspect that was missing," Ryun said. "1 found myself thinking that was a nice lap’ or we re halfway there’ and then it was 'gee, only 200 yards left', but there was no desire to push it." Ryun added that the biggest obstacle to overcome from his long layoff was timing. "Everything happens so fast on the track; I knew I'd have to la; sharp.
