VOTE TODAY at the EMU or UO BOOKSTORE I Candidate Statements Freshman Position One to be elected • Vote for one FREDDY VILCHES My name Is Freddy Vilches I am an undergraduate studying music and Spanish I have experience working with people in different kinds of organization settings, both In my own country. Chile, and here In the U S Currently I am an active participant in the International Cultural Student Program (ICSP) an outreach program of the U of O to the community I am also a member of the Chlcano Latino Student Organization (MECHA) and of the local Latin American folk music group SANDUNGA For all these reasons I feel I will be a good representative of the student body to the U of 0 Bookstore As a member of the Board I will try to reflect the students' needs so that the U of O Bookstore can more accurately meet those needs Among my priorities are the maintenance of the 11 % student discount on books and the improvement of the current buy and sell policy for used books I will also propose a more varied and creative selection of magazines and periodical literature I also feel that the U of 0 Bookstore could be more accessi ble for physically impaired people NEILL PLANT Hello! I have become knowledgeable of the budgetary pro cess I feel I have the qualifications and the desire necessary to be an effective, concerned member ot the Bookstore Board I would appreciate your input and ideas I would also appreciate your vote Thank you HEATHER COPELAND My name 15 Heather Copeland l am running for a position on lha University's Bookstore Board to ensure me U ol O Bookstore continues lo repre sent the campus community Many students teel cheated when they purchase their books, but this is because of a lack ot understanding concerning the Bookstore's non profit status and current 11 % book discount With improper management, however, the Bookstore's uncommon discount could quickly disappear Another matter ol tmpor lance is the quality of the Bookstore's merchan dise Does it satisfy the wants and needs of the student? I believe this is the most significant challenge lacing the Board ot Directorsone I would like to help conquer I am qualified for the position I am a responsi ble individual, and I would otter the Bookstore position the time and thought it demands and deserves DEBIPLACE Currently, I am the secretary of the Bookstore Board filling the unenpired term of a board member In addition. I am a non traditional student and the parent ot two children, one of whom has special needs Being a non traditional student. I am aware of the needs of that group of students who are older than average As the parent of a child with special needs, an awareness has been gained for those students who have a disability which creates a challenge lor them physically, mentally, or emo llonafly Being a Sophomore I am aware of some of the concerns of the student who is relatively new to the University Having been a Board member, I am aware of the legal and ethical responsibilities which comes with that position The Bookstore Board of Directors will be facing some difficult decisions In the coming term of of lice I would like to continue serving you, Ihe membership, in the capacity of sophomore representative lo the Board As a Board member. I will continue working on those issues which con cern you and I as members book costs, ac cessabllity concerns, and a vanely/price ratio which makes Ihe Bookstore responsive lo you Graduate Position One to be elected • Vote for one JOERN WETTERN I am running tor the Bookstore Board ot Dlrec tors because I want to continue the work I did dur mg the last two years in this position Not only did I en|oy being on the Board, but I also gained ex perience that could be beneficial to the Bookstore and Its members in the future I consider the following as pnmary issues for the Board's agenda -While the book discount was raised to 11%, we have to try to make books more affordable -The General Books selection was expanded, but It could be better -The Bookstore Is being made handicapped ac. cessibie More can be done here too Increased availability of used books should be one of the major concerns of the Board -Tha Board has to make sure that Bookstore employees get adequate compensation for their work I promise you that.
