Letters Logical After I read Brandon Shepard’s letter (ODE, April ‘i). 1 was compelled to reply. Mr. Shepard: Please use logical arguments! For exam ple. your swimming analogy is incorrect. One does not need to support oneself in water, because the water will support you. Also, regarding your state ment that God is probably not interested in the kind of theism that wins logical arguments, evidently you have no use for logical arguments either. International will become three times its cur rent size at a cost of around $55.BB million. Y o u m i g h t rightly ask (because you’re a taxpayer). "Where is the $550,000 a year to pay for tin; bond gonna come from (see ‘‘Rough waters forecast for Eugene budget." K-G April 8)?" And better yet, "Didn’t these city officials promise us in their propaganda that not another ci ty service would lx; sacrificed (have its budget cut) or our taxes raised to cover this tremendous new drain of tax dollars to the airport?" (If you believe this. 1 know where you can get a good deal on some bot tom land in West Eugene.) Don't worry about a thing. Eugene, because our city of ficials have an answer for everything (matter of fact, they know everything. )ust ask ’em). Let s all torget tor a minute that our library, fire depart ment, and police have had ma jor cutbacks recently. And please don’t look around at those closed fire departments, that pool in need of repairs, or all those city streets and sidewalks over seven years behind in their upkeep. lust focus your eyes on where those two new' streets (t>th and 7th) and their new entrance beautification program lead. Right now Peter's friends, ac quaintances. and people who never even met him are mourn ing his death and trying very hard to celebrate his life. They (we) are in a lot of pain and your self-righteous letter sure isn't helping. Sure, alcohol abuse is bad. but Peter’s death wasn’t about alcohol abuse. It was about youth, testing one's limits and living life to the fullest. And that, my dear friend, is what college is ALL about. Stephanie Kustner Student Sources To answer Mr. Bell: Maybe Dan Goulet's views toward homosexual promiscuity are based on research. Judging from his articles he's taken the time to study the issue. Perhaps Mr. Bell could cite one, just one, reputable study proving Mr. Goulet's message wrong. It's easy to find data to back up Mr. Goulet. In the August, '85 issue of the Nebraska Medical Journal a comprehen sive study appeared in an article "Sexual Orientation and Sex ually Transmitted Disease." It pointed out th.it only one in 25 people are homosexual yet their Y.I). rate is quite disproportions! to their percen tage of the population. According to “Medical Aspects of Homosexuality." published by the Institute for the Scientific Investigation of Sexuality, practices such as having dozens of sex partners per year, fisting and oral to anal contact are very common among male homosexuals Also, in a letter in the medical journal "Lancet" (Nov. t, 1988). a study done on several hundred London homosexuals showed that 41 percent reported to having two or more partners in the previous month, 53 per cent reported anal intercourse, 38 percent admitted to oral anal contact and 34 percent engaged in sadomasochistic activities. Space doesn't permit me to list more sources, but I'll bet Mr. Hell won't find space limitations a problem if he at tempts to cite evidence to prove Mr. (loulet isn’t presenting a realistic portrayal of this issue.
