Letters it —— , Safer-ride The SPA affiliated ad ministrations during '85/’86 and this '86/'87 year created, secured, and made Saferide a success. One thousand and seventy six women rode the van winter term, bringing the total to 1,406 riders this year. There has been more than 10 5 w o m e n volunteer drivers. The program has been self-sufficient with over $2,000 in donations and advertising. Saferide is a rape-prevention shuttle van service for women, driven by women. Maximum safety precautions are the first priority of Saferide. No. not all men are rapists, but it is im possible to screen a potential rapist. Rape is a reality for women. Kvery woman when she walks out at night knows she is vulnerable to potential assault. One out of three women will be raped in their lifetime. If a man rode on tin; van, got off at tin; same stop as a woman, Saferide would be leaving that woman vulnerable to attack. If a man drove the van, there is potential of abusing the; power and authority that the driver has. If one harassment occurred, it would directly undermine the goal and priority of Saferide. Many women who drive and ride Saferide would never ride Saferide again if men were able to drive or ride. In talking with the Brooks/Gaffney candidates I believe they would have men on the van as drivers and/or riders. SARAH LACHRAR AND JODIE MOONEY ARE DEDICATED TO EXPANDING SAFERIDE AND PRESERVING THE ALL WOMEN POLICY. VOTE FOR LACHKAR/MOONEY. This last week showed us that the students at the University can take their futures respon sibly into their own hands, kasey Brooks and Karen Gaff ney have the needed skills to run an administration that will accurately represent you the way an ASUO office should. The election didn’t end with the primaries, so don't give up yet. Please go out and vote one more time to insure we have an executive that will operate responsively and correctly. Matthew Smith KMtl Board of Directors Reflections I awoke Friday morning with the sail realization that I would not In* ASUO President next year. I ran and lost It has taken me a couple of days to put it all in perspective, and I have come to realize that the campaign was two of the most enjoyable, educational weeks of my college career. I would like to commend the following groups and people for their honesty and fairness throughout the campaign; The Oregon Commentator. The Oregon Daily Emerald, kasev Brooks, Karen Oaffney. Sarah Lachkar, Jodie Mooney. Steve Nelson, the MHAA. and the Minority Caucus. All of the above have earned my respect and praise. I would like to suggest im provements to the following groups; to the Creek Endorse ment Committee — look up the meaning of the word altruism; to Phil Levinson and Robert Ball who spent $10 per vote — if you would have given me $5 I would have voted for you; to the SPA — sometimes you have to sacrifice principle for electabili tv. maybe next year. The only losers were the peo ple who didn't participate. I would encourage? all University students to get out and vote this week. Best wishes to the win ners. Steven A.
