Recycle This Paper | Minority Caucus makes no endorsements By Alicia Gano Of the Emerald The Minority Caucus on Tuesday decided not to endorse any candidates running for elec tion because it was unable to reach a consensus about whom to endorse. The group, when formed, had agreed not to endorse without a consensus. Caucus member Mike Ken nedy said the purpose of the group, as a communication task force, was to “put pressure on the administration to discuss minority problems and find solutions." Specifically, caucus members want the University to address minority hiring of staff members and recruitment of minority students locally, na tionally and internationally. Tommie Reynolds, an ex change student from Alabama University, an all-black cam lecBons pus. said he was shocked at the lack of minority students on this campus. He described a sense of alienation and stereotyping minority students feel upon entering such a non-diverse environment. "Diversity on campus is lack ing. Eugene has the potential for offering culture that isn’t be ing tapped." Reynolds said. These security clearances are necessary for classified U.S. government research, she said. This bill deals specifically with that category of research, she said, and would eliminate this from happening. The University and Oregon State University already have formal bans on classified research and would not visibly be affected by the bill, Moseley said. The proposed Riverfront Research Park, which likely would be occupied by private firms leasing property from the University, would only be af fected by the legislation if University facilities were to be located at the park, according to Moseley.
