The Oregon women faced both last Saturday and won going away, 81*55. "I thought we performed real lv well under some crummy conditions.” said Oregon coach Tom Heinonen. "It was very cold and there were actually some snow flurries at times.” The Cougars, who have vet to heat Oregon in 10 tries, never posed a serious threat, and tIk? Heinonen was partly referring to Sharon Otterstedt. who answered one of the dual meet's big question marks. The Duck junior flew to a first in tin* 400-meter hurdles (1:01.78). qualifying for the Pac-10 meet. A converted 40(1 runner. Ot terstedt had only begun to run the event this season. "I'm really pleased." she said. "It was something I just started doing for the* first lime this year." Annette* Hand also came.1 into the meet a little* unsure of herself. The result was more than encouraging. Hand, a transfer from Montana State University who finished ninth at last year's TAU 3.000-meter championships, placed first in her specialty (9:44.4). ‘‘Annette had a nice race, par ticularly because they (the com petitors) jogged the first lap.” Ileinoncn said. Even in the events where the Duck mainstays came up a little short. Oregon received addi tion.d help. Such is the case with Sandy Whitlock, whose second-place discus heave of 105-4 prevented the Cougars from sweeping the top three places and qualifed her for the I’ac-10 meet. “We needed that.” Heinonen explained. "She had a really terrilic day. but Yvette (Brown) was sub-par.” Heinonen also cited the 100-meter hurdles performance; as a key to the meet. The Ducks, led by Katie O’Brien, swept the top three places. I he athletes just went out and competed.” said the coach, emphasizing the high level of output, despite the large cushion tin* team built throughout the meet. wsu Continued from Page 7 46.55. a PR that ranks fourth all time for Oregon, harry Williams ran his fastest quarter as a col legian to place third (47.45). Two events later it was Ohiamulera's turn. The Brazilian native started ten tatively. hut gained confidence and strength with each stride. He passed teammate Peter knudsen after 300 meters to win in 53.1. and knudsen held on for third place. The 200 was the next running event, and Dellinger played his trump card, entering Panning with Rick I Iannis, who had already won the dual at 100-meters in a PR of 10.50w. Moth burst from the field at about 100 meters, with Dannis pulling to the front to win in 21.1 (ht) and binning taking se cond (21.2 ht). The Ducks had outscored VVSU 20-7 in the three events and clinched their first win in Pullman since 1077. “That was the meet." agreed Dellinger. “At about the same time we were winning the discus and Latin Berry was hit ting his triple jump, and that surge put it away." Three Ducks posted their first wins of the year. In addition to Chiamulera, pole vaulter Jay Davis (10-0 '■■*) also won against a subpar field in his first action of the season. Senior Greg Aitkenhead won his first shot put competition (55-1 lh) after claiming six wins last year. “It's getting to he time tor these guys to come back." said Dellinger. “When the chips are down you want your hlue chippers in there." —UOBookstore uo BOOKSTORE 13th & Kincaid M-F 7:30-5:30 SAT 10:00 4:00 686-4331
