Sports -I-I-I _1 — — Ducks shut down Portland State behind Lewis' bat, Voeller's arm By Gary Henley Of thf> hmrrald Kira l.ewis went three for four in game one. and the Oregon softball team erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning of game two as the Ducks swept two games from visiting Portland State University on Thursday. In the opener. Oregon pitcher Sue Voeller pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on four hits, as the Ducks posted a fi-1 victory. Voeller w as backed up well as Oregon came up with 14 hits off Vikings pitcher Traci Moen. Voeller helped her own cause by going two for three with two doubles and an RBI. With her performance, Lewis ended a frustrating spring break. “I had been in kind of slump over vacation, but 1 broke out of it today,” she said. The Ducks put the Vikings away in the sixth inning, when Capi Lynn led off with a double to left field, Voeller followed with a double to center, and Sony Schroeder drilled another double down the left-field line, scoring Lynn and Voeller. Oregon coach Teresa Wilson commented, “this was really the first time we’ve put everything together. We hit the ball real well and played great offensively. Defensively, we came up with two double plays, and that’s always exciting. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Schroeder singled, scor ing Voeller. Vikings pitcher Jeanne Livingston then walked Stacye Gustafson, forcing in Lewis with another run. With the bases still full. Vicki fry singled and the gates were opened when the ball got by PSU center fielder Melonie Waters. All three runners scored, Fry wound up at third, and later scored on a passed ball to give the Ducks the final score of 7-1. The University of Portland and the University of Washington will compete with the Ducks in the three-way tournament. It gives the Ducks a chance for revenge against the Pilots for two earlier losses and also a shot at the Huskies, where an Oregon win would be considered just short of miraculous. After losing to Portland 5-4 in the season opener, the Ducks were hoping to get even last weekend when it hosted the Pilots. But an extensive spring break road trip left the Ducks tired, lethargic, and not completely healthy.The result was a second loss, this time 6-3. I don t think we were quite ready,” said Oregon coach Buz/ Summers. “We came back from California and a few of our guys had strep throat and other illnesses. We need to be psychod-up and healthy for our matches, and against Portland, we weren’t.” This time, Summers insists that his team is 100 percent healthy and ready to play. They will have to be, because the Oregon won’t get another shot at the Pilots this season. And while they worry about Portland, they will be competing against Washington at the same time. At this point, the Huskies are obviously the favorite, with Portland second. “We’re the dark horse right now,” Summers admitted. “But I’d like to think we can edge out Portland for second place.” Matches begin today at 3 p.m. and continue through Sunday. oizes ana preferred colors for men, women, children.
