Letters I-a Unoriginal A letter in rebuttal to Dan Goulet: I’m amazed at the presumptions made in your argument for “Amerika.” It’s disturbing to find a political science-type spouting such rhetoric. Fact: Russia was invaded by Germany in WWII. Russia knows what oppression is. It has monuments to their tens of thousands of slaughtered civilians. The United States has never been invaded except by the Europeans. Fact: The threat of nuclear devastation hangs over their heads too, and it wasn’t the Russians who nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Fact: In Vietnam, countless civilians were murdered and their villages destroyed by Americans. And you rail the Russians for Afghanistan? Ask the Nicaraguans if the United States doesn’t invade countries. Either way, it’s the big governments dictating to lit tle ones. Fact: Housing is at a premium in Russia, but tell the homeless in Frngene that they have it good. At least there, people have a place if they work, and they do. Here, try and find the work. Fact: In the Soviet Union there is censorship. Here, we’re just raising a generation of il literates who know nothing of evolution or quantum theory because such “propaganda" doesn’t agree with the Bible. We don’t ban or burn books in Tennessee. Perhaps you should take a U.S. history course or two. Con centrate on: the Railroad Acts; nuclear testing on American civilians and military person nel; controls on American In dians: and lapanese-American concentration camps. Check your facts before you follow your programming. Has the ’60s questioning gone to nothing? As far as “Amerika” was concerned, it was good they portrayed an American villain, but as speculative fic tion, the story was poor and unoriginal. Dewayne E. Smith Student Counterculture Michelle Brence’s article on the counterculture was very in formative. but it left out some important themes (Spectrum, March 12). The counterculture, which actually dates back to the begin ning of this century, is not an event but a process — a way of moving from the individual, material, assertive mode into one of community and fellowship. Here, the individuals in the community work toward a com mon good. This ‘‘counter culture” was and always will be a revolutionary concept because it promotes change. Ken Kesey, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Garcia or any other figure did not start the love movement or the counterculture. It was started by people — citizens who were tired of pursuing cor porate nightmares and who were stuck with a moral outrage against the crimes of American society. These crimes were (and are) the subordination of women, racial minorities, and the work ing class. Grassroot. hard working people are the heart and soul of the counterculture. Eugene is famous for pro moting diversity. Citizens of all types and creeds can live here with less fear of oppression and a greater atmosphere for in dividual freedom and creativi ty. However, the counter culture’s ideals are nowhere near reached. The citizens of Eugene can be proud of past ac complishments but there are still many issues that deserve focus, time and effort. The counterculture process is never-ending and must always adapt to new global problems. The best way to understand the counterculture is to be rid of the stereotypes involved. The "par ticipants” of the counterculture are not tofu, long-haired, granola-eating, brain-dead waterheads. but are doctors, lawyers, teachers and jour nalists who are members of the community striving for a more productive life.
