But Coach El win Heiny did not discuss the loss with his players after lOth-ranked Ohio State University powered its way to a 76-62, second-round NCAA tournament victory despite the record-breaking McArthur Court crowd of 5,157. ”1 didn't talk about tonight's game much, because we lost and they know that,” he said. ‘‘I really talked about the season in general.” And what a season it was. The Ducks overcame the pre season loss of two potential starters, Amy Pettersen and Tami Richard, and then a part time starter to academic defi ciencies in Shelly Ray. Then came the December losses to Top 20 teams bong Beach State University and Texas Tech, followed by an ear ly struggle in league play, los ing three of five games on the road. Oregon, behind the emergence of b-foot-7 freshman Stefanie Kasperski and forward Kris Clidden, started gaining steam in January. The Ducks won 11 games in a row. 13 straight at Mac Court, and avenged early season losses to the University of Washington, use and UCLA. Senior guard L a u ri Landerholm culminated an oustanding career by being named the Pacific 10 Con ference’s Player of the Year. The Ducks were even ranked at one point as high as 18th in The Associated Press poll, before the regular season-ending loss to the University of California at Berkeley. Oregon waded through all that adversity to post an im pressive 23-7 record, tie for se cond in the Pac-lO’s first year and receive an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. Ohio State did not give a hoot about Oregon’s great season. The Buckeyes, now 25-4, capitalized on some giddy nerves and poor shooting on Oregon’s part, and before the Ducks could rejuvenate themselves. Ohio State had a 6-0 lead.
