Convictions An important point has been missing from the “Fix Professor Rousseve" literature of late. After having been associated with I)r. Rousseve for some 20 years. I know him to lie a highly principled man of great moral and intellectual integrity. He deeply respects and expects diversity in thought and faith as long as the exhanges are open and reciprocal. He and 1 disagree in our personal beliefs, but each of us place great value on the opportunity to disagree. There is absolutely no reason to think that he would not accord anyone else the same space. The point that I am trying to make to my fellows in faith is to get off his case semantically and to demonstrate your conviction. You may bv so doing not only gain insight toward others, but also strengthen yourself. Trading talk for action would impress my friend, Professor Rousseve. and could startle the hell out of academe as well. Are you attempting to justify Bissell’s violent acts against “our great nation” (there’s that phrase again!)? Because the Weather Underground’s mass organization of ruthlessness (the dictionary’s simplistic definition of terrorism) issued warnings on an intended an nihilation of an ROTC building (‘‘naturally” a target?) everything’s okay? Let’s just forget it. Why do you become ill when the FBI captures a fugitive of justice? When they perform the duties we, as taxpayers, expect them to perform? See a doctor. No, the Green River Killer (a personal friend of mine. . . .I’ll call him Joe) has not been cap tured yet. It just so happens that Joe's a little better at eluding the authorities than Bissell. Besides, it's been a while since his last crime. And he has led such an exemplary life since then (he’s a dental hygenist in my home town). Everyone makes mistakes, especially in times of such turmoil like the ’80s_ What generation condones terrorist activities? Hopefully not my parents’, mine or my children’s. Gina VanCleave Speech, RHCM Reality Now I understand the resent ment from the Politburo and U.S. liberals over the mini series “Amerika.” It depicted an accurate and realistic view of a Soviet takeover in the U.S. Yes, liberals can no longer laugh and scoff at the anti communist films of the 1950s like “Dr. Strangelove” and “Red Terror” — “Amerika” hit at the nerve center of realism. Contrary to liberal/Soviet belief, “Amerika” will not pro duce a strain between U.S./Soviet relations. Soviet violations of the ABM and SALT 1 treaties, persecution of dissidents, invasion into other countries (Czechoslovakia. Poland. Afghanistan, et. al ). the sponsoring of com munist/repressive regimes in I*atin America and Africa, and the shooting down of civilian airliners are producing a strain between our nations. Do U S. liberals protest these rubber stamped Russian realities? No. they protest a fictionalized movie protected by our Con stitution under freedom of speech and self-expression. Did the scientific community stage protests across our coun try when the mini-series “V” aired? “E.T.." “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” aren't exactly ac curate with respect to scientific fact as we know it. However, just as inter galactic travel is fictional right now. it most likely will not be in the years ahead. Just as a Soviet takeover is fic tional right now. it most likely will not be in the years ahead if the U.S. loses its passion for freedom and the liberals seize the mechanisms of power. Dan Goulet Political Science Respect I must express my apprecia tion for the professionalism with which the Incidental Fee Committee handled the funding hearing of the Oregon Commentator. Last year, two IFC members attempted to block the Com mentator’s funding simply because they did not approve of the content of the paper. A third expressed concern that the publication causes a stir (heaven forbid!). In the end, last year's committee placed our re quest on the ballot to determine “usage level.” an action the Constitution Court shot down. This year’s committee carried no personal prejudices into the hearing, but instead addressed the matters at hand objectively. Their responsibility has earn ed our respect. Hats off. Duane Dungannon Publisher Oregon Commentator Anti-choice In response to Mr. Jeff Hoyt (ODE. Feb. 18). Mr. Hoyt, those of us who consider ourselves reasonable detest the descrip tion "pro-abortion” because the label is inaccurate and misleading. Generally, “pro choicers” do not advocate or promote abortion. I like kids. I do, however, recognize abor tion as a valid alternative to the subjection of an unwanted child to unprepared, and perhaps resentful, parents, or quite often, parent singular. If indeed all fetuses are allow ed to mature into human be ings, regardless of the situaiton, can you guarantee a safe, healthy life for the child? Are you who insist on intervening in our decision process also willing to assist in the care and feeding of our children? Or, Mr. Hoyt, do you fall in with Reaganist republicans and im posing moralists whose beliefs dictate that all fetuses are human beings and should be given a chance, but whose social responsibility (and social programs) falter once the con tractions begin? Please. Mr. Hoyt, consider that there are more deeply felt and painfully weighed factors in the abortion choice than “1 just don't want one.” In many instances it is the situation, and not the individual, which dic tates the decision to abort. You see. Mr. Hoyt. I consider all three as well: the baby, the woman, and the society. In ad dition. however. I consider the quality of the life which the in fant will enjoy. There is more to life than being alive. As for labels, Mr. Hoyt, how do you feel about ''anti choice?" 1 thought so. Michael Olfert Rhetoric and Qmimunication Stance At the University Senate meeting on Feb. 11. President Olum accused me of saying that he would lx? "happy” to have classified Star Wars research in the Park. B.J. Thomsen reported that accusation without repor ting my denial of it (ODE, Feb. 12). The statement of mine which 1 believe to have been misunderstood by the President was the following: "President Olum intends to allow such faculty-initiated businesses to engage in classified research, be it Star Wars or other secret military research. If he persists in this intention, the Park will not en joy broad faculty support. In fact, it will suffer from faculty and student opposition, an op position that could turn to destructive bitterness. What shall we do? We, as custodians of the University and as citizens of Eugene, must advise Paul Olum and the State Board that things are not right. Classified research was banned from (his campus 20 years ago by action of the faculty. Paul Olum's willingness to allow such research in an essentially on-campus Park is a treat to our open community and a blow to the tradition of faculty governance " I stand by that passage as an accurate description of Presi dent Olum’s public position, at least as of tin? moment when 1 delivered that address to the Senate. Franklin W. Stahl Professor of Biology Insulted From past letters, I would hope people would remember that I'm not insulted by being called a pig. People, find out what bothers me. Then your calls will be worthwhile. If you're going to scream over the phone, quiet down enough so that 1 can hear your insults. Ad mittedly. I was impressed with the lady that said, “ditto on the last message.” She needed so meone to think up her poor insult. It's been said that people ac cuse others of what they feel guilty of. Thus. 1 understand why a lady called and said. "Beer and sex is better than drugs and masturbation.” As Advocate, I want to reassure this lady that she can get high and play with herself. It’s alright and you don't have to feel guilty. It might be better than getting drunk and having sex with someone you don’t know or will ever remember. Maybe you’ll get some satisfaction. To those that call and scream at me over the phone. Why don’t you say what you think to my face. I do and place my name to it You people don't have the integrity to leave your names. Thus, a few rides about integrity. Don't accuse others of what you’re guilty of too. Face the person you’re insulting. Don’t shake someone's hand limp wristed. If you won’t follow these few pointers, at least think up your own insult. Question: Why do you people leave insults on my answering machine? This is your Advocate playing with a clear conscience.
