O'Donnell will be playing in the number-three position, hop ing to improve on her 2-14 mark at that spot last year. Zech has moved down to the number-five position from last season’s number-four spot, while Kalapus, who finished (i-li playing number-five singles last year, occupies the sixth position. The Ducks will hopefully pro sper from a successful recruiting year as three freshmen will be playing vital roles on the squad. Kelly Stuurt. a product from Thousand Oaks. Calif., is "one of the strongest players to ever play at Oregon," Jacobson says. "She has a really good serve and the strongest overhead I’ve ever seen on campus.” Stuart, who is currently rank ed 38th in the 18 and under division in Southern California, will he playing in the top singles spot for the Ducks. Rumi Nagamoto. ranked Kith in all of Japan last year in the 18 and under division and a highly-ranked doubles player as well, is presently playing fourth singles for the team, but Jacob son expects her to move up. Nagamoto is undefeated so far this season. The Ducks are very stong at the number-six singles spot with four players who can play well, but are lacking depth at the top. according to Jacobson. Oregon lost some close mat ches a year ago, but the third year coach says “this year we have more of a chance to pull out the marginal matches. "A lot of the matches we play will boil down to who wins doubles.” The Ducks have three doubles teams that can beat each other on any given day. says Jacob son, which may leave the number-one duo vulnerable. At the same time, the number three team will be strong, she says.
