Ducks edge USC at buzzer; crush UCLA over weekend The Oregon women’s oasket ball team registered an impor tant Pacific 10 Conference sweep over the Southern California schools this weekend in McArthur Court, elevating its chances to receive an NCAA tournament berth and possibly be ranked in this week’s poll. The Ducks edged 18th-ranked USC, 79-78, Friday night when Stephanie Kasperski’s despara tion shot dropped at the buzzer. The Trojans inched their way back into the game — a game in which neither team led by more than eight points — when center Monica Lamb scored on a layin to pull USC within one, 77-76, with just 27 seconds left on theclock. Oregon turned the ball over on its ensuing possession, and l^mb followed up with a short jumper to give the Trojans the lead (78-77) with eight seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Ducks’ Lauri Landerholm sped down the court and misfired a jumper. Kasperski collected the rebound and lofted the last-second shot to give Oregon the win. Gabi Neumann led all scorers with 31 points on 15 of 21 from the field while playing up against one of the best center’s in the conference in the Trojans’ Lamb. Neumann also topped all rebounders with 11 caroms. USC outshot Oregon 54.4 per cent to 47.4, but the Ducks dominated the boards, outre bounding the Trojans 48-25. The Ducks completed the sweep Saturday night, routing UCLA 77-57. Oregon, 19-5 overall and 11-3 in the Pac-10, scored the first nine points and kept UCLA under tight reins for most of the game. The Oregon women’s tennis team won 36 straight sets without losing a single set to upend the University of Portland (9-0) and Portland State University (9-0) Saturday in Portland. Coach Sue Jacobsen was very pleased with her teams’ perfor mance although the competi tion wasn’t that stiff. “The fact that we won so easi ly... I think it shows that we’re looking to be a strong contender in the Northwest,” she said. I he Bruins made a final run with 8:06 remaining to move within seven, 57-50, but the Ducks dominated the boards and coveted free throws to secure the victory — Oregon's eighth straight. Landerholm led the Ducks' offensive attack with 20 points, while Kasperski poured in 18. r-\ I^nderholm also led the team with 12 rebounds and seven assists. The Ducks battle with conference-leading University of Washington on Thursday night in Mac Court. The Huskies, ranked 19th last week, are 12-2 in conference play and 20-4 overall.
