Honor societies are both im portant and misunderstood, said Sharon Bosserman, presi dent of the University Mortar Board. “Honor societies are impor tant because they give people much-deserved recognition." she said. “However. I also think that there’s a common misconception in that the general public thinks honor societies are for smart, intellec tual, bookworm-type people, when actually members tend to be quite active people who pro vide service and volunteer their time in the community." To break away from the misconceptions surrounding honor societies. Eugene 4-J Schools Superintendent Margaret Nichols, an advocate of peace education,, was invited to deliver the keynote speech. Nichols will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the EMU Fir Room. Other Honors Week events in clude the presentation of awards to more than 80 juniors who have outstanding academic achievement at 7 p.m. tonight in Gerlinger Hall. An honor society information table will be staffed Monday through Friday in the EMU lobby. MEETINGS The Student Senate meets to day at 3:30 in the EMU Maple Room.
