The Oregon Ducks suffered a heartbreaking 64-63 Pacific 10 Conference loss to Oregon State University in McArthur Court, their first loss in "the Pit” after nine consecutive victories. The outcome of the game could very well be called a fluke of sorts. The Ducks led the entire game up until OSU forward Bill Sherwood swished a three point shot with two seconds re maining. Oregon frantically called a timeout, but with just one second showing on the clock, the game was history. Oregon coach Don Monson and his players were left stunn ed and frustrated with the outcome. "The outcome surely was tough to take," said Monson, whose team dropped to 13-10 overall and 7-7 in the Pac-10. "My kids played hard, and they played emotionally." OSU was able to win the game primarily because of the three-point shot — something Monson has been against ever since it was put into effect. Just when Anthony Taylor had slammed home two points on a breakaway to give the Ducks a 63-55 lead and bring the 10,099 fans to their feet to rock "the Fit," OSU turned to the three-point weapon feared bv Monson. OSU’s Eric Knox canned a 20-footer to pull the Beavers within five, 63-58. The Beavers then sent David Girley to the free throw line, where he missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. OSU came right back down the floor, and Knox hit another three-pointer — this time a slop py bank shot — to cut the ad vantage to a field goal. Turn to Ducks, Page 9A —UO Bookstore— Naturally...
