The quality you want at a price you can afford Asian Council plans celebration By Sarah Kitchen Of the Enwrild A Chinese lion dance sym bolizing good luck, prosperity and the absence of evil spirits will open the second annual Asian Celebration on Sunday at the Lane County Fairgrounds. "As Asians we would like to share our culture with everyone in the Eugene/Springfield com munity," said Vem Ho. Asian Celebration facilitator. The idea for the celebration started in 1985 when a dinner and Asian entertainment was held at the Eugene Hilton for a visiting Chinese business man. After the dinner, several peop1 decided to organize a council in order to coordinate a similar production for the entire community. The Asian Council of Eugene/Springfield, consisting of members of the Japanese. Chinese, Philippine. Indone sian. Thai, Vietnamese and Pacific Islander communities, has been organizing the celebra tion for the past three months. The purpose of the celebra tion is to stress cultural awareness instead of just con centration on the political and racial aspects of the Asian com munity, Ho said. “With an increase in the Asian population to this area, many Asians felt the need to meet others, while at the same time, sponsor activities to heighten the community’s awareness of the diverse Asian communities residing in this area,” Ho said. \Afe’ll Capture "Vfour Heart! / \\‘*V JUST CALL 687-8600 ) COMBINATIONS (Available in all three sites) Hawaiian Answer < anartian Bacon Pineapple t «na < heese Smasher Onion G'een Peppei Pepperoni anailian Bacon Mushrooms Bee* Sausage I itra th« k ( rusi A f «tia ( heese Meat Eater S.ii.imi ( anailian Bacon Pepiteroni Beet Sausage I *tra thick t rust Combination I anailian Bacon Onions Green Pepper Peppemni Mmiuimnis I <na ( heese Vegetarian’s Answer Onion Green Pepper Mushrooms Olives Pineapple I alia ( heese Taco Pista Answer Mozzarella * tu-ese Taco Meal Reims! The money raised from last year’s celebration was used to produce an Asian business directory. Money from this year’s celebra tion will be put toward presen ting more Asian cultural events such as cooking classes, and art and dance presentations. Between 60 to 75 percent of the 1,542 foreign students at the University are from Asian coun tries, and many of these students will participate in the celebration. “We have a program at the University in which some foreign students are receiving schrlarship money in return for sharing their culture,’’ said Peter Briggs, International Ser vices assistant director. Some of the Asian students who are in this program will be working at the celebration, either performing or cooking. “We often get requests from members of the community ask ing how they could invite foreign students to their schools, which is how Vern (Ho) contacted us," Briggs said. Steve Tjokro, a University student from Indonesia, said he enjoys going to the various cultural activities presented in Eugene throughout the year and will be going to the celebration to see the Indonesian dancers. Tjokro. who has been at the University for two years, is in terested in seeing how different countries are represented in the United States. “As an Asian student, I like to know how my country as well as other Asian countries will be presented at the celebra tion,” he said. Turn to Asian, Page 9A Correction The Oregon Daily Emerald on Thursday incorrectly reported that the nuclear-free zone or dinances passed by Eugene city and Lane County voters in November do not prohibit nuclear war planning. However, section 3, paragraph 7 of the ordinance specifically prohibits city participation in “any civil defense population evacuation program exclusively intended to be implemented upon the outbreak or threatened outbreak of nuclear hostilities.” 3Cl 1 Vouch of Class i Clothing We Pay More For Clothes!!
