Letters Poor prose In response to Brian Frary's letters to the ODE: Your syntax and language usage are abominable. I find myself so frustrated by your poor usage. I can’t even appreciate the idiocy of your arguments everyone else seems to find so hilarious. Your blatant disregard for proper grammatical structure and clear reference leaves the reader struggling to find the next joke. Perhaps a proof reader or a literate friend could help you better present your case. When you say. "...your reasoning is misinformed." 1 assume you mean that either the individual is misinformed or that the reasoning is flawed. When you say. “. . .the second law is not always the case," do you mean that it doesn’t always apply? How might one arrange to have, "elements shaken up at the speed of the vibration of light? It is wonderful to see that you are able to approach issues in science with a healthy dose of humor — perhaps it will help you maintain perspective in the presence of people you clearly don’t understand. Alex Gardner Eugene Sandbox Willy Bils, Ron Munion, et al appear to be quite earthy peo ple. Not that I would accuse them of trying to make a moun tain out of a molehill in the case of the ASUO Insurance issue. It’s just that if they have such an overabundance of energy for sandbox politics, perhaps they should work instead with Steve Nelson and the ASUO to secure the exemplary child care pro gram at the University. Katherine Gorham Education Pro<hoice Attention Jeff Hoyt, (ODE, Feb. 6): First of all, there is no unwavering "feminist" posi tion on the abortion issue: also, I don’t believe there is any such thing as a pro-abortion person, be she feminist or not. I find it rather amusing that the pro-life people find it so dif ficult to utter the word PRO CHOICE. Their arguments might not be as powerful if the correct term for the movement was used. I seriously doubt anyone is out there promoting abortion, but fighting for a woman’s right to choose is the issue at hand. The need for this is obviously beyond your comprehension — and all of the other men who feel the need to clutter the Emerald everyday with their views on this issue. You see. Mr. Hoyt, you don’t understand because you will never be in the position to have to choose whether to continue your education or drop out. go on government assistance (if you can get it), or raise a child even if the unborn is the result of rape or incest. I find it rather disturbing that Hoyt and the other men, so per sistent in voicing their opinions about the abortion issue, felt the need to do this, yet they will never have to directly face the issue themselves. Mary Sullivan Eugene No service I recently sought legal advice from the AsiJO legal services. Legal services had a conflict of interest and sent me to the ASIJO insurance represen tative. Ms. Shirley Chase, whom I was told would know the name of the independent at torney assigned to handle cases that legal services could not handle due to conflicts. Chase was very helpful with explaining non-legal resolu tions to my problem, but she was not aware of an indepen dent attorney and sent me to the ASIJO. The ASIJO secretary was also helpful, saying its legal services would have a booklet in ex change for a student fee. Legal services had no booklet and sent me to ASIJO President Steve Nelson. Nelson told me he didn’t have any information regarding what legal services ASIJO is suppose to provide for a student fee. I was again told they had a booklet. Nelson also told me no legal services would be provided for me outside of some possible ar Letters Policy The Emerald will attempt to print all letters containing fair comment on topics of interest to the University community. Nelson insisted an ASIJO legal representative on campus created a conflict of in terest. and that I was on my own regarding my legal needs. In short. I’m out the value of my legal services fee. and no one knows what legal services are provided for this fee. Thank you. ASUO. Scott Elliott I.aw Bible facts As many of you know. Brian !’’rarv and I have been writing in a lot lately in RESPONSE to the accusations that the Bible is full of fallacies. The letters in r esp ons e t o ou r s have developed a pattern. Many peo ple don't seem to realize that, yes, it is possible to become part of the Christian faith through objective, scientific reasoning. Both Brian and I became Chris tians while looking for facts, not something to merely believe or to make us feel good. So often people m a k e assumptions about the Bible and Christianity that is not bas ed on their own research, but hearsay. It's ironic that these people complain, ignorantly, that to be Christian, we must lack objectivity. Brian and 1 have nothing against these peo ple but have much against what they say. If we let it sit, misunderstanding goes on. We aggressively insist that those spreading the lies concerning the Bible qualify their statements. In turn, we welcome questions about our own claims. Since we are extremely limited in what we can submit by letter to the Emerald, if anyone has questions, feel free to call us at 344-0344 or write to 1057 Patterson, Eugene. 97401.
