Ducks down Cal, 86-73 By Capi Lynn Of I hr hmrrald The Oregon men's basketball team played a near flawless se cond half to register a come from-behind Pacific-10 (in ference victory over the Univer sity of California at Berkeley, 86-73, Thursday night before a frenzy crowd of 7,948 in McAr thur Court. “The second half was just outstanding.’’ said Oregon coach Don Monson. “I don’t think I could have asked them to play any harder — offensive ly or defensively. We took it to them, and we didn’t make many mistakes. “The fact that we could come back and play such an outstan ding second half shows that we are playing with more con fidence,” Monson said. The confidence showed as the Ducks shot a sizzling 61.5 per cent (16 of 26) from the field in the second half, while playing a tenacious defense that forced Cal to shoot a meager 35.3 percent. "I just felt they outplayed my kids — they were more aggressive, and they showed they wanted it more.” Hut the Ducks proved that they wanted the game even more when they stormed out in the opening minute and a half of the second half to score three straight field goals and pull within one, 42-41. Cal signalled for a timeout, but Oregon’s momentum was not to be inter rupted in the least. Oregon center Sven Meyer got the hot hand and hit four consecutive shots to give the Ducks a 49-46 lead at the 13:23 mark. The two teams exchanged the lead twice before Oregon seized it for good. 60-59, on Anthony Taylor s three-pointer with 6:53 to play. The Bears made a run at the Ducks, but David Girley canned two three-point buckets to erase any of Cal’s hopes. Meyer singled out the Ducks’ intensity level as the key to the win: ”YVe played much more intense in the second half,” Meyer said. “When it's a close game, the first three minutes of the second half are always real ly important." After a shaky first half. Ducks fans were treated to a clinic of sorts in the second half. The fans showed their appreciation by rocking the "Pit” with their stomps and yells. The victory extended Oregon’s Mac Court winning streak to eight. The Ducks are 9-1 at home, having lost only to Idaho State in its opener. On a night when Taylor, who had averaged 21.4 points a con test prior to the game, was held just 13 points due to a hounding Cal defense, the Ducks received big help from the other four starters. Girley led the wray with 23 points on eight of 12 from the field, including five of six from three-point range. Meyer got back on track after struggling of fensively of late, pouring in 20 points, 14 of which were crucial second-half points. Forwards Jesse Nash and Keith Balderston added 15 and 10 points, respectively. The victory improved Oregon’s record to ll-H overall and 5-5 in the Pac-10, while Cal slipped to 13-9 and 6-4. The Ducks will be looking to make a sweep of the visiting Bay Area schools Sunday when they host Stanford University at 3 p.m. in Mac Court.
