Men Against Rape. “It’s difficult to talk about the issue of rape with other guys, but when you talk one-on-one with them, they usually accept that they are responsible for preventing rape,” said Jim Mours. a group member and psychology major. The group seeks to educate men about rape, status, roles and power through ongoing community education pro grams. Working in conjunction with the Rape Crisis Network, the group’s newly formed outreach program includes presentations to University health and women’s studies classes, and visits to Lane Com munity College and area high schools. Other efforts involve lobbying for a safer physical environment for women and confronting in stitutions that thrive on the op pression of women. Statistics show that one in three women will be raped in her lifetime, while only one in 10 rapes are reported, said Kevin Ferry, a Latin American studies major and Men Against Rape co-coordinator. In addi tion, 75 percent of rape victims know their rapists on at least a first-name basis, he said. “There exists a tangible bar rier between men and women because every man is a potential rapist.” Perry said. "Only when society promotes equal status, equal roles and equal power for both sexes can this barrier disappear." For violence against women to end. men need to become more aware of the roles they play and how they perpetuate Turn to Rape, Page 9 LOOK THE WAY YOU WANT . . .
