MISCELLANEOUS The EMU Cultural Forum will present independent film maker Jon Jost as part of its "Focus on the Filmmaker" series on Monday nights. "It’s my own personal belief that we’re better off with (quarter-long) courses with a conceptual understanding of the principles involved in more subjects, rather than a more in depth exposure to only one or two of those courses.” The Oregon Student Lobby sent a letter to each State Board member explaining the OSL’s opposition to the change to semesters. The OSL letter said the quarter system was advan tageous because "access to higher education is greater since students can enter and leave more frequently. This is especially important for the in creasing numbers of non traditional studentsenrolling in our colleges and universities." Nick Van Vleet, student body president of Oregon State University, told the State Board that switching to the early semester system, in which fall semester begins three weeks earlier than the current fall quarter, could mean a loss of money for students who work in Oregon agriculture during the summer. No University students testified at the meeting. University students reacted with cautious optimism. “It really depends on how they phase it into the system," said Maureen Burke, a first-year University student who has yet to declare her major. Burke said her first reaction was supportive of the semester system. She has attended semester-long classes at other schools and believes “terms go too fast” in the 10-week quarter system to allow for in-depth study of a subject. First-year biology student Robin Madell said the quarter system is better “because you get to take more classes. In col lege you're supposed to be fin ding out about many different things... especially if you don’t really know what you want to do.” THE MUSLIM STUDENT ASSOC.
