Kitzhaber names committee chairs

Two state senators from Lane
County were appointed as com
mittee chairs for the 1987
Legislature by Senate President
John Kitzhaber on Tuesday.
Sen.-elect Larry Hill, D
Eugene, will chair the labor
Committee. Sen Bill Frye. D
Eugene, will again chair the
Judiciary Committee
Although Democrats are still
"juggling" the composition of
the Joint Ways and Means Com
mittee, Sen.-elect Grattan
Kerans, D-Eugene. probably
will be named to the committee,
said Dan Field, a spokesman for
Kitzhaber.
The worker’s compensation
program and unemployment
compensation are the two major
issues HUI expects to deal with,
he said While a large number of
employees depend on these pro
grams for assistance, "at the
same time the cost and efficien
cy of the programs are a concern
of business." Hill said.
Comparable worth legisla
tion. which passed the 1985 ses
sion but was vetoed by Gov. Vic
Atiyeh. also should come
through the Ubor Committee.
Hill said.
"This time Gov.-elect (Neil)
Goldschmidt has said we need
to do something on comparable
worth, and he is supportive of
the concept." he said. "That
should have a positive impact"
on clerical workers at the
University, especially women,
he said.
The committee also will ad
dress mandatory drug-testing of

Hill said.
"?t's my personal opinion
that some occupations bring on
a high level of stress," Hill said.
As an example. Hill pointed out
that firefighters are especially
susceptible to heart attacks, and
he believes they should receive
compensation, he said.
However, former Portland
Police Chief Penny Harrington's
claim award for work-related
stress "is an example of the type
of claims employers, both
private and public, don’t think
should be covered.” he said.
