Sweeper Continued from Page 3 we are baring down closely onto the rear end of a parked Honda Civic. I wonder if my constant chatter has distracted Nick from his concentration. Or do small cars get swept up with the leaves? I brace my feet against the floor board, as we're only about eight feet from the car's taillights and I know this giant machine can't turn in time to avoid the collision. My eyes close and my teeth grit. Nick doesn't miss a beat. We swerve around the car. missing it by inches, and slide back to the curb in front of the car. “The parked cars are a nuisance. You just try to get in between each one if you see that you have a little extra space. You don't want to push it too much." Once in a while the street sweeper hits a car. not very often. "The hardest part about the job is watching your ass." Nick says. He got rearended by a car on Coburg Road one night. "It usually don't hurt the sweeper too much.” Nick says. He's more afraid of sweeping into a bicyclist who glides through the intersection without a light when Nick's looking for the cars. Nick has been working the night shift most of his 28 years with the city. "I kind of like it." he says. "The night shift has been good to me when my wife was work ing and we were raising a family. "It's surprising how many people work nights. When you stop for coffee you always see people who you get acquainted with over the years. ! talk with the garbage man and janitors and see how their night's going.
