Netters look to move up in Pac-10 standings By Craig Harris Of Uw Emerald Coming off a wild, come from-behind win over two-time NCAA Division II champion Portland State University Wednesday night, the Oregon volleyball team will return to Pacific-10 Conference play with a weekend series against the University of Washington and Washington State University. The Ducks will take a 7-5 overall and 4-2 conference mark into WSU’s Bohler Gym tonight against a Cougar team that has had its troubles. WSU. riding on a three-game losing streak, won only one set in last weekend’s series against the University of California Berkeley and Stanford. A year ago, the Cougars were 0-12 in the now-defunct Nor Pac Conference. The Ducks swept them in both meetings 3-0. and they have won only two out of the last 28 matches with the Ducks. Oregon will be in Seattle Saturday night to take on Washington, which is also hav* ing problems. The Huskies have dropped their last three mat ches. and are tied with their in state rival for seventh place in the Pac-10 with a 7-7 and 1-3 record. The Ducks also shut them out last year 3-0 on both meetings. Stili, Oregon coach Gerry Gregory isn't taking this trip iightly. “Both teams are substantially improved and they will be shooting for a win. 1 don’t ex pect to get a sweep although it is a possibility." Gregory said. "But if we play like we did at the beginning of the PSU match, and dig a hole too deep, we could be in trouble. We can't wait till the end of the match to kick it in or else it may be too late.” “Hopefully we will learn that in each match we need greater intensity... we need to start stronger and we can't allow the match to progress to the fifth game.” he said. One of the players who helped to salvage an Oregon victory over PSU was junior Teri Kramer. After being shut down in the first half of the PSU match, Kramer came back to record 36 kills, and in game four had back-to-back service ares at a crucial point in the fourth game to help propel the Duck’s victory. Gregory had nothing but praise for his outside hitter. “Teri did a great job to carry our team emotionally," Gregory said. “She is a groat com munication leader." The other half of Oregon’s “K-Connection". freshman Michele Krobshach, cashed in on 37 kills against PSU. falling four short of the team record held by All-American Sue Harbour, According to Gregory, there hasn't been a team all year that has successfully blocked this duo. but Washington State may have an answer in 5-foot-10 junior Laurie Van Diest. Van Diest is leading the con ference in blocks with 51, averaging 1.65 per game. ‘'Van Diest will block us from time to time, but we will still get our kills.” (Iregorv said. "Any hitter will get blocked, but our hitters get in trouble when we hit wide or long. I have a lot of respect for WSlI's block, but we have nothing real ly to worry about except our side of the net. I know that is repetitive, but it's the truth." It's been said that repetition forms habits, and if Oregon can keep their side of the net as in tense as it was in the latter half of Wednesday's match, it could be two marks in the win column and a move that will pul the Ducks within a match of conference-leader UCLA. Men, women runners tune-up in invitational The Oregon men's and women's cross country teams travel to Salem to compete in the Willamette Invitational Saturday. According to coaches Bill Dellinger (men's) and Tom Heinonen (women's), the meet is primarily a "tune-up" for the upcoming season. "We have to compete in six cross country meets.” Dell inger said. "If not. we're in violation of NCAA rules." Because of the six-meet rule, the Ducks are farced to compete in Salem. Dellinger, however, will not send his varsity squad to the invitational. ‘‘I don’t want to have too many meets in a row." he said. "We're primarily poin ting towards the Pac-10 and District-8 meets.” The women's team will use the Willamette meet to judge times, according to Heinonen. I Personals 1 PROBLEMS?
