Yellow or green? The Faculty Club controversy Original color of Collier House sparks debate By Chris Norred Of the Emerald What was the original color of the University Faculty Club? According to most of the photos in the University ar chivist’s office, the faculty club used to be black and white, but that evidence has not quieted a minor furor on campus — what color should the faculty club be repainted? The Faculty Club’s exterior may be repainted sometime this year, and the Faculty Club's outgoing president. Bean Com rade, said club members and staff would like it to be in the original colors. But this presents a problem because no one knows what that color was. ‘‘A whole number of people volunteered to do the detective work (to determine the original color),” Comrada said. The Physical Plant, after tak ing some paint samplings from the building last spring, decid ed the original color was yellow. But a University architecture student used the controversy as a basis for his master's thesis and determined that the color had more of a green cast to it. University Planner David Rowe, who was involved in the yellow paint decision, said more extensive testing had pro ven the greenish-color theory. He said funding for the re painting project is still up in the air, and the building also has some problems with dry rot that need to bo fixed before the building is painted. Collier House, constructed by physics Professor George Col lier in 1886. is the second oldest building on campus. It turned 100 years old last spring term. The University bought the house from the Collier family in 18H5. At that time, the only other buildings on campus were Deady and Villard halls. The house served as home to a succession of University presidents and chancellors. An interior restoration of the building was completed about one year ago in preparation for the 100th birthday celebration in the house.
