New Panhellenic president anticipates successful year By Kirsten Bolin Of lha KnuiU Despite finals and currant obligations at her sorority as the trainer for 40 pledges, Julie Carstka is excited about the prospect of leading the whole sorority system when she ussumes her now role as Panhellenic president in January. "Creeks do a lot of good things," Carstka says. "It’s a great way to get to know a lot of people; It's a great way to get involved with leadership on campus, and it allows you to learn to work with people one-on-one." C.arstka, a Junior finance major and a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, was chosen for her position, along with Rob Taylor, the new Interfraternity Council presi dent, earlier this term. The Greek system is currently in a period of transition at this campus and at other cam puses across the country, Garstka says. Three fraternities and one sorority have been newly established or restarted on the University campus in the past three years, she says. “I definitely see the expansion as a positive thing," Garstka says. "The percen tage of Greeks has grown and that is going to help us. and people are going to take us more seriously " But while the overall strength and numbers in many Greek organizations are growing, increased attention is now being focused on problems frequently associated with sororities and fraternities. Alcohol and drug abuse is perhaps the most frequently voiced complaint. A Greek public relations council established by Panhellenic and the 1C this year will try to in crease awareness about the problem of substance abuse and other concerns by con ducting various campus seminars. Another problem the Greek system is tackling is having non-University students, usually local high school students, attend fraternity parties. "We’re going to be working on the alcohol situation and checking (for University) ID so we don’t have such a problem with high school students at parties,” Garstka says. "I think the community sees this as a big problem so we will work on that in the coming terms.” Other newly elected Panhellenic Council members include: Sarah Lachkar, vice presi dent; Jennifer Kottkamp, membership chair woman; Pam Pifher, Greek Activities Council chairwoman; Susan Humphries, public rela tions chairwoman; Christy Gersich, sorority activities chairwoman; Lisa Hastings, secretary; and Melinda Camplin. treasurer.
