Sports Ducks head to Vegas By Tony Ahern Of Um Kmairalrf The Oregon wrestling team will be one of 43 collegiate wrestling squads shooting for the team title this weekend in the Las Vegas Invitational Tour nament in Nevada. To win that title, however, the Ducks would have to upset such perennial powerhouses as Iowa State University, Oklahoma State University, and Oklahoma University. "Realistically. 1 think we'll end up somewhere in the mid dle of the pack,” Oregon coach Ron Finley says. tack of experience is the Achilles heel of this year’s Duck program, still in what Finley calls "the building stage. “We're a bit young to be real competitive this early in the season." One of the few Oregon grap plers with experience, Sean Braddock. will miss this chance to compete against some of the country's best wrestlers due to eligibility problems. These pro blems stem from Rraddock missing a term of school last year to undergo back surgery. "The Pac-10 hasn't met on his application for eligibility yet," Finley said. “That's a shame because Sean had the best chance of anybody on our team to win a championship in this tournament.” Braddock's spot at 142 will be filled by freshman Danny White, a two-time Colorado high school state champion. Also out for the Ducks is junior Dan Martin, who wrestles at 1B7. Martin has a pinch in his neck and will be replaced by freshman Rick l*ocke from Kagle Point. With Braddock out, Oregon hopes for placings rest mainly with senior Mike Harter at 177 and sophomore Glenn Jarrett at 134 Tokyo now a Mirage for Otto By Robert Collies Of the Kmerald When the Oregon football traveled to Tokyo, Japan last week to conclude its season in the Mirage Bowl, many strange twists ac companied the Ducks on the trip. The Oregon players had to deal with little practice time, they had to sleep on 42-inch wide beds, and they had to eat rations of food that was not nearly enough to feed the average American football player. All of those scenarios were nothing com pared to the strange adventure that Oregon kicker Dean Otto had to endure. "I didn't take enough papers over there with my passport," Otto said. "I just presum ed that everything was taken care of on my passport.” Otto, a native of South Africa, is in the United States on a student visa, but he did not have the credentials to leave the country and return. "When I got over there they told me that the student visa is just a status, and that 1 did not have the proper credentials to return to the United States," Otto says. This fact did not make it easy to concen trate on football. "Everything was pretty much up in the air after they told me that," Otto says. "It put a damper on the trip because I didn't know what was going to happen." Otto was told that he would be able to board the return trip in Tokyo, but would pro uably be sent back to Japan after the plane landed in San Francisco before going to Eugene. That did not happen as Otto and the Oregon officials in charge of the traveling en tourage pulled a bit of James Bond-type adven ture out of the hat at the San Francisco Interna tional Airport. "They announced on the loud speaker that all the Mirage Bowl people should go into this one line,” Otto says. “So I just got in line and followed the rest of the people.” As he walked passed the customs officials his heart jumped, but fortunately there would be no further inquiry to his status. "Two things I learned from this trip — Japan is a very crowded place, and 1 will never travel without checking my passport again."
