A discussion on ski touring clothing needs including a look at the latest in design and fabrics. Also, a discussion on the prevention and treatment of cold related injuries. Nov. 18 (Monday): TELEMARK SKIING — 7:30 p.m., 177 Lawrence. The movie "Fall Line" about an exciting ski descent of a peak in Wyom Ing's Grand Tetons. CLUB SPORTS: CREW — The Oregon Club Sports crew team turned In a good performance over the weekend, competing in the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday and the Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday, both held in Seattle, Wash. On Saturday, the women’s experienced eight turned in a big upset, capturing first by six lengths while the men’s novice eight also captured first, beating a number of US teams and teams from the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia. The men’s heavyweight eight and the men’s novice four both captured seconds at the regatta. On Sunday, the men’s light novice four finish ed In third at the Head of the Lake regatta. When he first entered the room, the man who all still addressed as "Champ." looked physically impressive, especially for a man of 43 years. Up close, however, his eyes were glassy, almost non-seeing. All didn't even seem to be aware of articles in front of him. such as the aforementioned water glass and microphone. My disappointment continued when Ali spoke. Discarding any extended discussion of his career and/or boxing in general, he instead occupied most of the time preaching the wisdom of Islam and ranting about minority oppression. This spreading of "the truth.” he said, was now his occupation in life. Why have they changed everything but heaven? Why is it still all white? Why haven't they changed the Ijtst Supper? Why are they all still white? Why are the angels all white? Isn’t that something to think about? You who am white, imagine seeing a black Jesus all your life. Imagine the luist Supper is all black, all the angels am black. Wouldn't you all feel kind of funny? Wouldn't it mess up your mind if Jesus was black, all of the Last Supper black, all the angels black, all the saints and pro phets black? Wouldn't that kind of shake you, make you think? boxing was to make me known, and now my mission is just starting. You don't hear this kind of talk in church on Sunday. You don't hear this talk on television. The truth! I'm starting a truth campaign. It's time for the world to hear the truth today, Surely, such an occupation for a man of Ali’s stature is credible, but the way Ali delivered his message was not. At times his words spewed like unintelligible gibberish, and he often slipped into long lapses of silence while he appeared to be collecting his thoughts. If this hadn't been the former heavyweight champ, dressed in a three-piece suit, one might easily have mistaken Ali as just another raving lunatic on a street corner, passing him and his cause off with veiled embarassment and a spare quarter. This was definitely not the quick-witted, sliver tongued Mouth of old. Too many moments in the ring? Too many shots to the head? Early symptoms of a chronic illness? I, for one, am not here to answer any of those questions. But it is undeniable that the man has, for whatever reason, slipped. The awful truth, a truth even more bitter than the one that wrenched my heart while watching Ali lose to Holmes, is that Muhammad Ali is deteriorating. Sometimes 1 speak slow, that's my thing to stav in the press. You got to stay in the press, man. because when you are out of the press, you die. So 1 may come up missing tomorrow. ‘Muhamm ed Ali has come up missing. He hasn't been seen in two days', and I’ll be resting in a hotel in Cuba. I his is not the way 1 want to remember The Champ. This is not the way 1 will remember The Champ. Returning home from Portland on Thursday. 1 contemplated the afternoon. Riding into a gathering darkness, I closed my eyes against a welling tear and decided to remember Ali the way the man himself had reliv ed his greatest moment in the ring less than an hour before.
