Letters Stop hunger Albert Camus writes. “The world I live in Is loathsome to me, but I feel one with thn men who suffer in It." This world in which thousands of people starve to death everyday Is cer tainly “loathsome,” but to em pathize with the men who suffer constitues an effort to make this world a better place for everyone. It la an accomplish ment that consists of little more than caring for another human being. Right away, I want to add that you and I can eliminate world hunger forever The technology and the organiza tions to implement the technology already exist. Now what is needed is you and 1 to put it all into action. I keep referring to “you and I" because I want to emphasize that ultimately it is the caring person who makes this project work. I may be stating the ob vious. but you and I are the only ones here to do the job. The responsibility for eliminating world hunger and making this world a better place is yours and mine. Pater (iallo KugenH Cover running I just have some thoughts on Robert Collias' article (ODE. Nov. 5) “Thoughts about Duckville sport.” Throughout his article, Collias talks about what might have been or what could be. He said the Duck foot ball team would have been a bowl contender if they had only won more games. Pretty enlightening. Rob! He then said he thinks the Duck basketball team could be better than the tenth in the Pac-10 finish the coaches' poll has them picked for this year, loot's hope so. Instead of would be's or could be’s. Mr. Collias. why don't you spend some time writing about what is? On Monday, the U of O men's cross country team finished a close second in the Pac-10 meet. Arizona, a team that has been ranked number one in the na tion this year, was a distant fourth behind Oregon. One would think this upset, (second In the conference!) by such an unheralded team as this year’s Ducks, would deserve a headlining story. Instead, the cross country team is relegated to "Sport Shorts,” while half a page is spent on a 4-4 football team and a basketball team that has yet to play a game. I believe, Mr. Collias, that sports journalism should at tempt to write about what is real, not hypothetical. And while it's a fact that Oregon doesn’t have a great football team, and that no one knows how good or bad we may be in basketball, it’s also a fact that Oregon has a damn good cross country team and they deserve better coverage by the local press. Tim Wallace History /Pre-Law Limited ethics Aside from accusing me of “limited thinking" and a "small heart," (ODE, Oct. 14) Cathy Braden suggests that years of animal lab experience somehow render me less com petent to assess the issue of animal research than persons who have never visited a lab. I have visited and/or worked for animal laboratories at RPI, MIT. Albany Medical School, and this university, where I have observed and/or assisted researchers using cats, dogs, sheep, monkeys, mice, hamsters, slugs, grasshoppers, and crabs. Compared with other schools, researchers here are ex emplary in their humane treat ment of lab animals. While warm-blooded animals are used in research here, the fact remains that most ex periments on campus involve invertebrates. The point is, if one is going to anthropomor phize cats and rabbits, why not slugs and insects. Does Ms. Braden’s "reverence for life" have limits? Experimental animals are already treated ethically on campus; PETA's goal of stop ping animal research per se, renders their cause absurd for several reasons: 1) the priorities of a group which places animal welfare above human welfare are ethically questionable; 2) protesting animal research while benefiting from that research is hypocritical; 3) allegations drawn from hearsay rather than direct investigation denote a poorly conceived position. I refuse to stand accused of a lack of reverence for life for defending a form of research which has immeasurably im proved the human condition. How unfortunate Ms. Braden’s much larger mind and heart are incapable of weighing historical fact and long-term benefit in the balance of her very limited ethical system. Hiawatha Graduate, Music r Reduce gravity I would like to join the many groups attempting to educate the unsuspecting masses of the catastrophic impact of oppres sion on our very existence. Op pression is the suffocation or denial of many rights we have as human beings. Oppression must be stopped — slaughtered in its steps! We. as people of this campus, state, country, hemisphere, world, galaxy, and universe should never be denied, in any aspect, any of our rights. As a people, we should control, change,' or destroy any forces which hold us back or keep us from doing what we deserve to do. I am not attempting to unito this campus or a group of students toward any cause, I am merely trying to bring awareness of a situation that needs attention. As in dividuals we must stand behind our decisions. We have lived with oppression long enough! Reduce gravity now! In dividuals must realize the devastating effects of this op pressive agent and begin the revolution and freedom-fight against terrorism by the Earth! Anti-gravity lives! C.
