Film, discussion recall protests of the ’60s By Andrew LaMar Of Um Kiiwrild Students of today need to be reminded of recent American history and need to to be informed of the Reagan administration's poor track record on civil liberties, a civil libertarian Frank Wilkinson said Wednesday night at the Collier House. About 40 people watched "TheTorch Is Passed," a documentary on the student protests at the University of California at Berkeley in 1900, and then listened to a panel discuss the film and current events relating to free speech. The panel consisted of Burton White, one of the protesters in the film: David lidanque, associate direc tor of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon: Bill Goetz, one of the film's producers; and Wilkinson, a director of the National Committee Against Repressive legislation. Goetz said the film shows "small groups can come together and make a difference. They can fight for civil liberties and make a difference." The film focused on a student organization, known as SLATE, which achieved national attention when protesting the hearings of the House Un-American Ac tivities Committee hearings in San Francisco in May 1960, This was the first major student protest of Berkeley students, leading the way to an era of demonstrations. “That (demonstration) was, 1 think, the beginning of the 'GOs as we know it today," said White. Wilkirison compared the 1980s with the 1950s, noting a low level of student activism in both eras. For 15 years, Wilkinson fought to abolish HUAC, a committee primarily known for tracking down alleged Communists. Congress disbanded the committee in 1975. He said within the first six weeks of the Reagan administration, however, a revived version of HUAC, the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Security and Terrorism, was formed. * “I think he (Reagan) is the worst president on the standpoint of civil liberties 1 have ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot,” said Wilkinson, He is amazed by how little the students of today know about the recent history of freedom of speech in the United States, he said.
