Courtyard supporters continue protest By Andrew LaMar Of the Emerald In a repeat performance of last week’s demonstration, about 30 people marched on Saturday to protest Sacred Heart General Hospital’s refusal to extend leases to any businesses located in The Courtyard. The protesters, carrying signs, shouting slogans and distributing flyers, marched from Lenny’s Nosh Bar to Sacred Heart, where they circled the hospital. The group then marched downtown, making stops at Saturday Market and Fifth Street Public Market. A number of spectators signed a peti tion during the march that protests Sacred Heart’s actions. Curt Hopkins, one of the organizers of the march, said it was the most successful protest for the cause to date. Protesters fear the hospital is planning to level The Courtyard and other businesses in the area to make room for a parking lot. Sacred Heart's lease with Lenny's Nosh Bar expires on March 31. 1986. making Poppi's, a Greek restaurant, the only business in The Courtyard with a lease extending beyond 1986. Poppi's lease currently extends to the end of March 1987. but hospital officials are reportedly negotiating with the owners of the restaurant to end the lease earlier. Many of the same protesters marched to Sacred Heart on Oct. 19 and presented a petition containing 518 names to hospital officials. Since then, more than 150 addi tional names have been added to another petition. Hopkins said the second petition will bn presented to the hospital when it reaches 500 names, •‘Now they (hospital officials) are say ing. ‘We don't want to do anything with the area.' If so. then why don’t they ex tend the leases in the area?” Hopkins said. “I'm not sure there's a need for a parking lot." The group plans to take a survey of empty parking spaces near the hospital, both on the street and in parking garages, during peak hours, . Hopkins said. Many of the protesters were dressed in absurd clothing in an attempt to draw at tention to the protest. Hopkins said ‘■People are pretty shy when a bunch of lunatics are yelling at them, but it gets the word out. Then when they get home, they begin to think about what we're saying,” Hopkins said.
