Letters Time for peace This year's Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to a group of physicians for spreading a sim ple but vital message: nuclear war is the greatest threat to health and life. Modern medicine has neither help, nor a cure for atomic war victims. The only sensible medical response is prevention. Preven tion can be achieved by con trolling and finally eliminating the risk. The doctors have spelled out their prescription for survival in the nuclear age and recommend as immediate action: 1. A stop to all nuclear weapons tests through a comprehensive test ban treaty. 2. The United States’ participa tion in the Soviet moratorium on nuclear weapons testing before it expires at the end of 1985. 3. Meaningful negotiations for peace and arms, reductions at the'Geneva summit.in November.. President Reagan needs a lot of encouragement! 4. No extension.of the arms race to outer space, and stars.' We physicians and a majority' of scientists see the "Star Wars" . .program as an expensive, un workable dream'. Joan Dob bie, in the 'Emerald's fall'Orien tation' issue. 1 was, however, disappointed that Dobbie's name did hot appear under the photograph, which was accom panied by an article about Cafe WOW and Poetic Space magazine, both outlets for "obscure artists who might otherwise remain silent and unseen,” One reason Eugene writers sometimes remain obscure (if not unseen) is that journalists do not always take the care to Identify them in photographs, or for that matter, give them the credit they truly deserve. Not only has Dobbie volunteered many long hours as a co-editor for Poetic Space — a magazine that promotes both locally and nationally-known writers, but she is also a fine poet herself. Yes, if you. are on thefaeKwon Do team. I found this out when my nose was broken in this club sport activity. I hold a first degree black belt in this martial art. therefore I am experienced with the technical aspects of this sport. I believe that my nose was broken due to the negligence of the instructor. Had he been competent in teaching, he would not have let my opponent use full-contact kicking, or if he did permit full contact, he should have never done so without supplying us with pads. After my nose was broken, the instructor never came over to see me to see if I was all right, or if he could get me ice or a towel. As a result of this incident, I have dropped my Tae Kwon Do class and the club sport. In the future I would hope that the physical educa tion department might come up with a better screening process when hiring instructors. I found out the hard way that incompe tent instruction can be very painful. David Boyd Student Decide yourself It's a shame that nothing can be done on this campus without being attacked from a political standpoint, as is the case with the Cultural Forum’s film series. I do want to thank Louise Westling for bringing to my at tention that several of the films deal ruthlessly with war and Violence. However, we all need to realise that every coin has two sides. Perhaps “Rambd” should not be shown due to.its violence, and possible, psychological linkages, but I need not remind anyone of. its box-office success. . ' . • 1 would like to,mention, that the Cultural Forum will present both sides bf.the "Rambo " coin. Denis Chericone will give a lec ture’ entitled "The .Morality of War. Coming Home to Rambo."' However, if those of you who plan to protest "Rambo" on Fri day deny yourself the oppor tunity fo see the film, then you have no'basis to pass judgment on it. .* ‘ So 1 pose an alternative. Go see "Rambo’’ bn Friday night. Then go see Mr. Chericone speak on Monday/ Make up your mind, but don’t keep your ideologies so constrained as to jump ignorantly into an issue which you can support on the basis of hearsay. In the future, let’s remember that constructive criticism allows each of us to learn from our mistakes, but as witnessed during Reagan's attacks on Italy’s actions in the Achille l.auro incident, destructive criticism is an assured way of making enemies. What a great weekend to study! Oct. 19 and 20 were wet and windy days, so I had no distractions from my studying — or so I thought. The main library was my destination. I've discovered the third floor is fairly quiet with the only noise being footsteps and paper-shuffling. Not so on Saturday. Crackling candy wrappers, noisy gum chewers, chatterers, etc. bothered me so much. I had to move. On Sun day. 1 got even luckier — more talkers and even a“Walkman” radio. There is nothing like try ing to read economics to the beat of "Glory Days.” Aren’t libraries supposed to be quiet? Kathy Lee Psycology I .1. .! 11 " - ... .. Open your eyes It seems as though Ms. Miller feels people who are Jewish (or partly Jewish, like myself) should owe their first loyalty to Israel regardless of their citizenship. There is an implied seige mentality here which is dangerously narrow-minded. Israel was founded to protect jews from persecution. However, Miller seems oblivious to Israeli international conduct which could make anti Semitism a cottage industry again. I very strongly suggest that Miller open her eyes a bit. Per sonal attacks on myself will not save her (or my) neck if old style anti-Semitism is resurrected due to a new oil embargo trig gered by new, improved Israeli disregard of international law.
